16 priests named for first time in sexual abuse lawsuits At least three still active; total of accused at 130 By Michael Rezendes and Matt Carroll, 1/30/03 "The number of priests in the Boston Archdiocese accused of sexually molesting children grew to 130 yesterday, with the filing of a rash of new lawsuits that name 16 priests as molesters for the first time.  The new lawsuits, filed on behalf of 70 new alleged victims, include charges of rape, attempted rape, and fondling of minors against 40 priests and a former church worker who is believed to be a deacon. At least three of the 40 priests are in active ministry. Also named as defendants in some of the suits are two former auxiliary bishops in Boston, Archbishop Daniel A. Cronin of the Hartford archdiocese and Bishop Daniel A. Hart of the Norwich, Conn., diocese. They bring to eight the number of bishops, including Cardinal Bernard F. Law, who have been accused of negligence while they supervised the abusive priests. Law resigned Dec. 13, but the seven other bishops all head their own dioceses. Of the 16 newly accused priests, at least three are diocesan priests in active ministry, according to church records, and one is retired." http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/030/metro/16_priests_named_for_first_time_in_sexual_abuse_lawsuits+.shtml

An Injustice That Still Lingers - Gary Rosenblatt 1/31/03 "Ellie Hiller, then in his mid-20s and an employee of Rabbi Lanner for several years at NCSY, the youth arm of the Orthodox Union, wrote a letter in the summer of 1989 to members of the Orthodox community of Teaneck recounting Rabbi Lanner's abusive behavior. Hiller cited numerous examples as proof that Rabbi Lanner was unfit to assume the pulpit of the local Orthodox shul that was considering hiring him.  Rabbi Lanner, claiming his name had been maligned, brought Hiller to the three-rabbi bet din. The court's ruling was never published or made public, but Hiller was forced to write a letter of apology - apparently drafted and edited by Rabbis Willig and Lanner - saying that his initial letter's characterization of Rabbi Lanner was "false." And on the Shabbat after the bet din was held, and before the final decision had been made, a number of Orthodox rabbis in Bergen County took to the pulpit and publicly chastised Hiller for writing the first letter According to the letter from the group of 17 and other accounts, the bet din was a travesty of due process. The letter asserts that Rabbi Willig demanded Hiller write a letter of apology even before the hearing took place; that Hiller, the defendant in the case, was barred from the proceedings except for his testimony; that several witnesses later said they felt they were the ones on trial; and that one teen witness said that after Rabbi Willig asked her if Rabbi Lanner had raped her and she said no, Rabbi Willig just shrugged his shoulders....One of the other judges, Rabbi Yosef Blau, also of Yeshiva University, later became convinced that witnesses had been tampered with, pressured not to appear and/or lied to the bet din. Rabbi Blau sought to reconvene the court and notify officials of the OU but without success." http://www.thejewishweek.com/top/editcolcontent.php3

US plane damaged in Irish protest Concerns raised on possible war linkBy Kevin Smith, Reuters, 1/30/2003UBLIN - A peace protester was charged with causing criminal damage to a US Navy aircraft at Ireland's Shannon Airport yesterday, as the Irish Parliament began to debate the US military's use of the airport.  Police said Mary Kelly, 50, scaled a perimeter fence early yesterday and used a hatchet to attack the nose cone, front wheel, and hydraulic system of the cargo aircraft, causing about $545,000 damage. The incident sparked a security review at Shannon, which is located in the southwest of traditionally neutral Ireland, where protests are growing about the airport's role as a refueling stop for the US military before a possible war on Iraq.
....Ireland's opposition Green Party, which earlier staged a walkout in Parliament to protest preparations for war on Iraq, defended Kelly's action.

Published on Thursday, January 30, 2003 by the Independent (Cape Town, South Africa)  All Bush Wants is Iraqi Oil, Says Mandela
Former president Nelson Mandela said on Thursday the United States was preparing to go to war because "George Bush wants to get hold of the Iraqi oil". He was speaking in Johannesburg at the three-day International Women's Forum, which is being held in Africa for the first time.Criticism of Bush dominated the former president's address as Mandela encouraged women throughout the world to be "bold with its leadership and condemn the looming war America is preparing for"."The women's forum must make sure that all irregularities in the world are rectified. A war on Iraq is something we must condemn without reservation," the former president said.

E&P Survey Marks Shift in Media Attitude  By Ari Berman
NEW YORK -- Although newspaper opinions once appeared virtually monolithic in support of an attack on Iraq, editorials from many of America's leading newspapers are now among the voices questioning the wisdom of, or timetable for, the possible conflict.....
One angle consistently dodged in editorials is the topic of Iraqi oil, which is viewed by some as one key objective of any American action. And when The Columbus Dispatch raised the issue, it spun it in America's favor, maintaining Jan. 9 that, yes, oil is the lifeblood of the U.S. economy -- and, no, there's nothing wrong with removing Hussein if he jeopardizes U.S. access to his country's resources. Baltimore's Sun suggested on Jan. 12, however, that oil and democracy in postwar Iraq deserved an open and honest debate. That's one statement few could disagree with. And what better place to start such a discussion than the editorial pages of U.S. newspapers? This would serve the public interest in a way the politicians in Congress promised to, but never could.
