-Caveat Lector- We've been informed that the new bomb is called "MOAB". This is an interesting appelation considering it's mythological origins.
We are constantly reminded about the villages of "evil" Sodom (not to be confused with "Saddam" [although both follow(ed) the "God of Abraham", Lot being a relation?], though your leaders -- by referring to Mr Hussein informally by his first name -- may just want you to) and Gomorrah where the angel from on high went down to find honourable people those places. The end result was the destruction of the villages with Lot's wife being turned into a pillar of salt and Lot was left with his two daughters. (We might assume that Lot and his kin were honourable enough to be allowed to egress the village.) Sometime thereafter, the daughters, whose honour Lot is supposed to have been a fervent protector, decide that Lot needs to repopulate his tribe so they accepted -- on two separate nights -- his essence into themselves, thereby effecting the repopulation effort. One of the results was Ammon; the other, curiously enough, Moab. Now, as in other considerations about the Genesis as we read it, how did subsequent generations come about? Points to ponder. But: while pondering, here's a little of the mythology ... er ... speculation: http://www.execulink.com/~wblank/sodom.htm The Destruction Of Sodom "Early the next morning Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before The Lord. He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, toward all the land of the plain, and he saw dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace." (Genesis 19:27-28) Whether or not it was a nuclear explosion, as some people now believe, or another sort of natural or supernatural force, one thing is certain - the destruction of Sodom came with great power. Its devastation was so complete that, unlike so many other ancient cities, no trace of it has yet to be found. The location of Sodom, along with Gomorrah and the other "cities of the plain" is subject to speculation. What is known for certain is that it was somewhere east or southeast of Jerusalem, in the area of the Dead Sea, also known as the The Salt Sea. Some believe that it was at the northern end of the Dead Sea, while others say it was at the southern end. We do know that Abraham was able to see it from the great trees of Mamre, near Hebron (Genesis 18:1, 19:27). Hebron is located about 18 miles (29 kilometers) west of the Dead Sea, at a latitude about half-way between its north and south ends. Why did God destroy Sodom? There seems to be a number of different opinions in our changing world, so perhaps it's best (as of course it always is) to let The Word of God in The Holy Bible account speak for itself. The entire story of Sodom and Gomorrah is found in Genesis chapters 18 and 19, along with numerous other references throughout the Bible. Here are a few excerpts - "The two angels arrived in Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city." (Genesis 19:1) "He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast, and they ate. Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom - young and old - surrounded the house. They called to Lot, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them." (Genesis 19:3-5) "The two men said to Lot, "Do you have anyone else here - sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here, because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to The Lord against its people is so great that He has sent us to destroy it." (Genesis 19:12-13) "By the time Lot reached Zoar, the sun had risen over the land. Then The Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah - from The Lord out of the heavens. Thus He overthrew those cities and the entire plain, including all those living in those cities - and also the vegetation in the land. But Lot's wife looked back and she became a pillar of salt." (Genesis 19:23-26) "The look on their faces testifies against them; they parade their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! They have brought disaster upon themselves." (Isaiah 3:9) "In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire." (Jude 7) http://www.execulink.com/~wblank/moab.htm Moab Moab has 3 different uses in The Bible - the name of a man, the name of a people that descended from that man, and a territory that they occupied. Moab, from the Hebrew, has been interpreted to mean either of the father, or beautiful land. Both interpretations are quite accurate. After escaping The Destruction Of Sodom, Lot and his two daughters took refuge in a mountain cave (Lot's wife and two sons-in-law did not survive the destruction). One day, Lot's oldest daughter, whose judgment had obviously become severely warped after having lived in Sodom, decided to start an incestuous family - "Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave. One day the older daughter said to the younger, "Our father is old, and there is no man around here to lie with us, as is the custom all over the earth. Let's get our father to drink wine and then lie with him and preserve our family line through our father." That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and lay with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up. The next day the older daughter said to the younger, "Last night I lay with my father. Let's get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and lie with him so we can preserve our family line through our father." So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went and lay with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up. So both of Lot's daughters became pregnant by their father. The older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab; he is the father of the Moabites of today. The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi; he is the father of the Ammonites of today." (Genesis 19:30- 38) Despite their unfortunate beginning, the descendants of Moab became quite numerous and powerful, and were often connected to Bible History (e.g. Numbers 22:3-14, Judges 3:30, 2 Samuel 8:2, Jeremiah 48:11-13). Good and righteous Ruth was a Moabite (Ruth 1:4), and her descendants, through her great-grandson King David (Ruth 4:13-22), formed one of the lines from which Jesus Christ was descended. (Matthew 1:1-17, Luke 3:23- 38) The land of Moab is located east of The Jordan River and The Dead Sea, and south of the Arnon (Numbers 21:10-15). Today, Moab is within the Kingdom of Jordan. It was in the Plains of Moab, opposite Jericho (Numbers 22:1, 26:63, Joshua 13:32), that the Israelites made their last encampment before they entered the Promised Land after their Wilderness Journey - "Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo [see Heartbreak Mountain] from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah, across from Jericho. There The Lord [see Rock Of Ages] showed him the whole land - from Gilead to Dan, all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the western sea, the Negev and the whole region from the Valley of Jericho, the City of Palms, as far as Zoar. Then The Lord said to him, "This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, 'I will give it to your descendants.' I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it." And Moses the servant of The Lord died there in Moab, as The Lord had said. He buried him in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is. Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone. The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days, until the time of weeping and mourning was over." (Deuteronomy 34:1-8) Forwarded for your information.
