-Caveat Lector- The Perfect Totalitarian Regime
by Populus Libertas Liberty is something that all Americans should be continually striving to obtain and retain. Whenever we as American citizens let our guard down those liberties and rights that our forefathers fought and died for are trampled under the jackboot of tyranny, be it the federal, state, or local governments, or simply the �tyranny of the majority�. Tyranny comes in many forms and with many levels, but they all have the same goal�to force some to bend to the will of others. After the Soviets took control of Russia, it was hard for people to miss the obvious signs of tyranny yet many did. Members of the Communist Party, Union members, and Soviet employees saw the new Communist State as the ultimate freedom�a freedom from the bourgeois who had ruled them for so long. After all, the majority ruled. It was a government of the people, and they were allowed to vote. Of course there wasn�t much choice in who to vote for, but they were given the chance to vote nonetheless. However, for those who refused to join the Party or Unions, or otherwise resisted the state, Soviet Russia was a totalitarian hell. When Hitler came to power in Germany, the nation was still a Constitutional Republic just as America is today. Feeding on the peoples� fears and claiming to be protecting them, he quickly took complete control of the government, after the terrorist burning of the Reichstag, and the nation became a dictatorship. Most people, however, had no idea that they were even in a dictatorship until it was too late. Contrary to popular belief the Gestapo didn�t randomly take people in the middle of the night just because they could. If a person did not involve himself in politics opposing Nazism, paid his taxes, and was not Jewish or some other specially targeted group, he was pretty safe. For most in Germany life went along about the same as always. Why complain? The economy was vastly improved, and the Nazis were only arresting �trouble makers�. Unlike the Communists in Soviet Russia, the Nazis did not rid Germany of its class system, nor did they prevent capitalism. Oscar Schindler is a pe rfect example of how a middle class man became upper class through capitalism in Nazi Germany. Of course he did so at the expense of the Jews, but later realized this evil and was actually successful in saving quite a few of them. Meanwhile as life seemed to be going on pretty much the same, the government was slowly stripping the citizens of any and all rights, and hauling those who spoke out against them to concentration camps. Both Communism and Nazism had illusions of freedom, where there was none. It is this illusion, however, that kept the people in check for so long. Though both tried to give off an illusion of liberty both failed in the end as they were revealed to be totalitarian dictators. The perfect totalitarian government is one that can prevent the citizens from ever realizing they are not free. Can this possibly be achieved? I believe it can. To Americans the ultimate evidence of freedom is the right to vote. In every federal election we have at least two candidates to choose from. According to Joe Everyman, this makes us free. Unfortunately the right to vote is only as good as the candidates who are running. Imagine for a moment if you will, a two party government like our own, except one is the Nazi Party and the other is the Communist Party. No matter whom you vote for, the winner will be either a Nazi or a Communist. Since neither believes in personal liberty does it even do any good to vote? Even in a democracy citizens are not free unless the candidates elected are in favor of freedom. In reality there is little difference between the Republicans and Democrats. When Bill Clinton was President the Republicans constantly cried foul whenever he would take more liberties from the American people and enlarge the federal government. Now, however, a Republican President and a Republican controlled Congress rule ove r the largest most intrusive federal government in American history. Also, we have a free press. Freedom of the press is important in a free society, and a vast majority of the press is not state owned as it was in Nazi Germany, and Soviet Russia. Though the press is free it is owned by only a handful of powerful people. For example, six companies, Disney, Viacom, AOL Time Warner, GE, Newscorp, and USA Networks own almost everything we see on television. Is it really hard to imagine these six media giants working together to shape the vision of America? It goes further than that however. The newspapers are also owned by big conglomerates, including the New York Times, the Tribune Company, Gannett, Knight-Ridder, and the Washington Post. Likewise any independent news sources which get out of line from what these �mainstream� companies consider �fair and balanced� is quickly labeled anti-American or conspiracy theorists and discredited almost immediately. This makes any independent news gathering that goes against the views of the powerful almos t imp ossible to relay to the public no matter how truthful or valid that news is. It can also be said that the media chooses our President or at least narrows it down to the final two. When one realizes that the mainstream media is controlled by just a handful of people one must consider if the people really have any say in who is running the country. Unfortunately most Americans believe that our country can never become a totalitarian regime. In fact many are scoffed at when they suggest that America is quickly becoming totalitarian. The truth is, however, that with each new President, our federal government grows larger and more powerful crushing the rights of the states and of the people underneath its massive weight. Every Presidential candidate promises to reduce federal spending, yet with every state of the union address the President expresses his desire to create more federal programs and spend more money on more things. It is like he has a blank check and the American people will just happily pick up the tab to pay for our own enslavement. Right now the liberals are blaming conservatives for our erosions of liberties, just as the conservatives once blamed the liberals. Until we get out of the mindset of this two party system and wake up to the hard reality that Democrats and Republicans both want larger government and more power we will continue to lose our rights until we are nothing more than serfs licking the boots of our imperial masters who we happily voted into power and to whom we happily pay large salaries to oppress us. --------------------- -iNFoWaRZ Left-Wing and Right-Wing.
