unwinnable but he didn't care and gladly sacrificied 60,000 GI's and horribly
wounded
many 100,000's to cover his sorry South Texas bony ass. Not to mention the
enormous damage done to our economy with repurcussions still felt today.

To say nothing of the damage it has done to the psyche of this country. As a country we still haven't "faced" Vietnam. Don't get me wrong, I feel a great deal of compassion for these poor GI's who were so hideously used by our government, and then abandoned and betrayed by that same government when they return. I know too many vets (and I never blamed them for the war) who have deep psychological scarring from that atrocity (and when you look at it rationally, it was an atrocity, perpetuated by our government on both the Vietnamese AND our soldiers who were pawns). That there were protests here only shows that the young people of this nation and others knew that this war was wrong and tried to stop it. It's unfortunate that some of them didn't realize that these vets were pawns as well, because they also share some of the blame for the vets pain. I think we, as a nation, have learned this however, because I don't hear protestors of the war in Iraq blaming the soldiers, I hear protestors of the war blaming our administration and the British admin. There are too many vets who returned from the first Iraqi war with gulf war syndrome, and I'm very concerned about the health of all these soldiers that are there now (to say nothing of the amount of wounded and maimed soldiers, we may be looking at depleted uranium poisoning). I was raised in the military, and I respect those who give service to their nation in peacetime and in war, even if we don't always see eye-to-eye politically, because the military can really control your life (to say nothing of your thoughts).

Anyway, back to our "facing" Vietnam. I'm not sure how we would do that to
begin to heal from those incredibly deep wounds. But we need to start to try.

Obviously nothing is learned. Our new Iraq 'splendid adventure' will cause
equal
if not greater damage to our nation and again the criminal political class
responsible for these outrages will escape unscathed and enriched.
