Named Running Wolf at birth, (and now re-named Earth Thunder by the
elders) she is a survivor of a 1957 massacre of her Cherokee Keetoowah
White Wolf clan which, like so many other Cherokee who had gone to
Mexico and elsewhere between 1721 and the 1830s "Trail of Tears"
period, had fled the eastern U.S. and continue live the ancient
hunter-gatherer lifestyle in the fastness of the Idaho's Sawtooth
Wilderness in the Rocky Mountains.
In an incident that eventually evidently spawned the motion
picture "Last of the Dogmen," starring Tom Berenger (excepting that
the movie had a happier ending) all the adults in her family of 50 to
70 members were murdered by white miners, and then she - at age 10 and
with four other younger children - were taken to orphanages in Boise.
She was treated as a "feral child" by "the system" but eventually
acculturated and became active in the American Indian Movement in the
1960s and was close to her teacher the renowned medicine man John
"Rolling Thunder" Pope, whose traditional medicine ways was were
studied by the Menninger Foundation. She eventually came to terms with
her psychotic anger and now teaches people how to heal themselves and
our Mother, the Earth.
