Anybody Worried Yet?

A day in the life of military operations under Bill Clinton's "leadership."
The following appeared in yesterday's Las Vegas Review Journal:

* Knight Ridder reported that Serbian forces were crossing the border into
Montenegro for the first time, risking a further widening of the war in
Yugoslavia.

* The Associated Press reports that "two jets on a Kosovo training mission
accidentally fired 500-pound bombs that killed a civilian security guard" in
Puerto Rico. Four others received minor injuries.

* Associated Press reports that Clinton's British sidekick, Tony Blair,
mistakenly demanded that Slobodan Milosevic step down as a condition for the
end of the bombing. NATO officials had to scramble to correct Blair's
boo-boo. Someone might want to let Mr. Blair in on the plan (if there is
one).

* Knight Ridder reports that Slobo's military is outfoxing the allies by
using helicopters to resupply their 40,000 troops. The Serb choppers "make
quick, low-level flights that keep them from being detected by NATO forces."
Does the name "Ho Chi Minh" ring a bell to anyone?

* Thanks to six years of Clinton/Gore downsizing of the military - and
dueling operational tasks in Iraq and Yugoslavia - American allies in the
Pacific Rim are now pretty much defenseless on the high seas. The Associated
Press reports that there are now no - repeat NO - U.S. aircraft carriers left
safe-guarding the Pacific. This condition may continue well into the fall,
say defense department officials. But heck, North Korea and China wouldn't
take advantage of these circumstances, would they? Would they?

* "A Marine helicopter crashed into the Pacific Ocean during night training
in southern Japan, killing at least three servicemen." A fourth is still
missing.

Placing Blame Where It Belongs

"Republicans are branding the Kosovo conflict the 'Clinton-Gore War,' and
blame the White House for what they consider military blunders that are
failing to achieve any of the goals set out by planners a month ago. While
Secretary of State Madeleine Albright told the Senate Foreign Relations
Committee on Tuesday that 'NATO is on the right track,' Republican leaders
said they found exactly the opposite during a weekend tour of the Balkans.
In increasingly strident attacks, key Republicans are making it clear they
don't support the NATO military campaign, which they say has increased Serbia
strong-man Slobodan Milosevic's power and has failed to stop the 'ethnic
cleansing' campaigns. ... Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Ted
Stevens, R-Alaska, ...blamed Albright and U.S. diplomats for dragging the
United States into the war, and then placing restraints on how the military
can pursue it."

In Clinton We Trust

The House Commerce Committee voted 39-6 yesterday to send highly radioactive
nuclear waste to the Nevada Test Site by June 30, 2003. The President has
promised to veto the bill - and that veto is what Nevadans are counting on to
keep this waste out of the Silver State. Betting on Bill Clinton to keep his
word? Not a very smart gamble by a state known for gambling.
