The FBI warns it could be explosive. The feds issued a new terror warning for all marinas and public waterways to be on alert for floating debris that could be a deadly trap. Thousands of people live and work and play on the water around Puget Sound, so this FBI warning really hits home. It means if you see garbage floating on the water, it's best leave it alone. "There's always things in the water that are dangerous," says Edmonds boat owner Ian Poll. But the dangerous things he's talking about are deadheads, logs, or garbage. And boaters are always on the lookout for them. "You're always keeping your eyes peeled not to hit stuff and hurt the boat, foul the prop," adds Poll. But now there's a new twist. An FBI alert went to police departments across the country advising that innocent-looking garbage could be dangerous. It could be booby-trapped and rigged with explosives, so if a boat impacts it or someone picks it up, it explodes. "Well I think it would be good to let boaters know," said Nadeane Rutledge, who has boated all her life. When she sees garbage, she usually picks it up. "We're always looking at things in the water, and we would notice something that doesn't belong," she said. However, most boaters don't seem to know about the alert. The FBI tells KOMO 4 News its bulletin is law enforcement sensitive, meaning the Bureau doesn't talk about it. And the local police we spoke with didn't seem to have passed the information along to boaters. That's worrisome to some boaters. "I would expect if there is some kind of concern to make it public and let people make their own decisions about what they want to do," says Seattle boater Todd Flood. "It seems like it's nothing that should be kept secret." But explosives in the water seems a stretch to some. "I just don't see a guy on a yacht making much of a target for al-Qaida or any of these terrorist organizations," says Poll. There is no specific threat connected to this warning. Rather it's a heads-up to stay alert. But boaters say they'd like to know, because it's the unofficial law of the sea to recover items that are adrift. "There's all sorts of things out there," adds Rutledge, "so it's something to be aware of and I'm glad to know this." The U.S. Coast Guard adds that if you do see anything suspicious on the water, you can report it to their National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802. Or, if you're on the water, you can use the universal hailing and distress frequency on the radio, Channel 16, to notify the Coast Guard. ------------------------ Yahoo!
