NOTES:

A number of people have asked for more examples of Michael Moore's
fakery in "Fahrenheit 9/11." Here's a nice recounting from the Media
Research Center:

"The TV ads for Michael Moore's "documentary" Fahrenheit 9/11 feature a
mocking clip of President Bush on a golf course. Bush declares, "I call
upon all nations to do everything they can to stop these terrorists
killers," and then Moore jumps to Bush adding, as he prepares to swing
at a golf ball, "now watch this drive." Tuesday night on FNC's Special
Report with Brit Hume, Brian Wilson noted how "the viewer is left with
the misleading impression Mr. Bush is talking about al-Qaeda
terrorists." But Wilson disclosed that "a check of the raw tape reveals
the President is talking about an attack against Israel, carried out
by a Palestinian suicide bomber." Last Friday, NBC's Lisa Myers also ran
through some of Moore's other distortions."

http://www.mediaresearch.org/

Yet another excellent listing of Moore's deceits comes from a good
friend of ours, Dave Kopel. He has just completed a 27-page monograph
which details the "Fifty-six Deceits in Fahrenheit 911." The monograph
will be published on National Review Online, but is already posted here
on Dave's website:
http://www.davekopel.com/Terror/Fiftysix-Deceits-in-Fahrenheit-911.htm

"Given how important Michael Moore's dishonest Fahrenheit is proving to
be in spreading disinformation, I thought it was important to get the
monograph onto the web as soon as possible. If you could provide a web
link to the monograph, or give the monograph any other publicity, I
would
be grateful."

CONTROL OF OTHER DEMOCRACIES? (Prometheus 1992)-- winner of the
1992 International Criminology award of the American Society of
Criminology.

QUOTES TO NOTE:

"As cinema, Roger ["Roger & Me"] was brilliant. As journalism, it was
fraudulent--a point that helped cost Moore an Oscar nomination. Critics
noted that some of Moore's chronology was pure fiction. His much-touted
30,000 GM layoffs came not in 1986, as he implied, but over the course
of a decade and in several different states. He showed people getting
evicted who'd never been GM workers. As the press began detailing
discrepancies, Moore accused various journalists of lying or being GM
tools and hung up on at least one of them in a snit."

"It seems there are two possibilities for why Moore would have missed an
opportunity to smack Israel around before what was likely to be his
biggest audience by far. One is that making President Bush appear to be
the pawn of both Israel and Saudi Arabia might seem a bit inconsistent.
But inconsistency (or incoherence, or ad hominum attacks that are
entirely baseless) has never stopped Moore before, least of all in this
movie ... The other possibility is much darker. It is also suggested by
the fact that former Gore hatchet man Chris Lehane, has been hired by
Moore to defend him against attacks on the truthfulness of the movie.
The Lehane hiring, and the avoidance of attacks on Israel, suggest the
possibility of close coordination of the planning and scripting of the
movie with the Democratic National Committee, the Kerry campaign, and
various left wing support groups: ACT, moveon.org, and others. This
movie is clearly intended to influence voters (not just preach to the
choir), and help swing a close election to the Democrats by making
viewers think a lot less of George Bush ... Did Terry McAuliffe, or
somebody from the Kerry campaign give hints to Moore to lay low on
Israel? This was a movie financed, after all, by Miramax, run by the
Weinstein brothers. Might open attacks on Israel have turned off the
Weinsteins, or some of the reviewers who wrote the uniformly glowing
reviews of the movie, helping fuel its early box office appeal? Would
Barbara Boxer, running for re-election to the Senate, have been such an
enthusiast for the movie after attending a special showing last week, if
Israel were a primary target? Would all the coordination between the
DNC, the 527 groups and Moore to promote the movie, have been made more
difficult if Moores typical anti-Israel screed had penetrated the
script? Inquiring minds want to know."

"You can call Michael Moore all kinds of things - loudmouthed, obnoxious
and self-promoting, for example. The anorexic Ralph Nader, in what must
be an all-time low for left-wing invective, has even called him fat. The
one thing you cannot call him, though, is a member of the "liberal
elite. Sure, he's made a ton of money... but he's a genuine son of the
U.S. working class ... Like the notion of social class itself, the idea
of a liberal elite originated on the left, among early 20th-century
anarchists and Trotskyites who noted, correctly, that the Soviet Union
was spawning a "new class" of power-mad bureaucrats. The Trotskyites
brought this theory along with them when they mutated into neocons in
the 60's, and it was perhaps their most precious contribution to the
emerging American right. Backed up by the concept of a "liberal elite,"
right-wingers could crony around with their corporate patrons in
luxuriously appointed think tanks and boardrooms - all the while
purporting to represent the average overworked Joe ... Beyond that, the
idea of a liberal elite nourishes the right's perpetual delusion that it
is a tiny band of patriots bravely battling an evil power structure.
Note how richly the E-word embellishes the screeds of Ann Coulter, Bill
O'Reilly and their co-ideologues, as in books subtitled "Rescuing
American from the Media Elite," "How Elites from Hollywood, Politics and
the U.N. Are Subverting America," and so on. Republican right-wingers
may control the White House, both houses of Congress and a good chunk of
the Supreme Court, but they still enjoy portraying themselves as Davids
up against a cosmopolitan-swilling, corgi-owning Goliath."

"Does it strike anyone else as odd that the Supreme Court seems to be
providing more First Amendment protection to pornography than to
political speech? ... Meanwhile, the Federal Election Commission has
landed the duty of deciding who else can speak, or not. Last week it
delayed a decision on whether Michael Moore, creator of "Fahrenheit
9/11," must stop airing ads about his anti-Bush film, since those ads
contain unflattering references to the President seeking re-election.
Mr. Moore is an "artist" whose expression ought to be protected by the
First Amendment. Yet if he can freely advertise his propaganda
condemning a political candidate during an election season, why can't
that same political candidate make a movie extolling his own record and
advertise that? But, no, that might violate McCain-Feingold. On the
other hand, if a right-wing pornographer made a pro-Bush film featuring
erotic scenes and put it on the Internet within 60 days of an election,
would the Supreme Court call it protected speech? Just asking."

" ... there's one thing about which the Second Amendment zealots are
absolutely right: The people who obediently traipse to the sheriff's
department and jump through the hoops required to get handgun permits
aren't the ones who commit gun crimes ... anyone who thinks the gun
crime rate will be reduced ... by passing more stringent gun control
laws is nave. All those laws do is prevent hunters, target shooters and
other gun enthusiasts from owning a tool that is no more dangerous than
a hammer or an automobile, when used properly ... If the gun laws we
have on the books don't keep criminals from committing gun crimes, why
would another unenforceable law make any difference? Criminals ignore
such laws. That's why we call them criminals."

CARRIER SPEAK
http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg/topstories/story/0,4386,259015,00.html

The United States is planning a massive show of force in the Pacific
Ocean near China to register a point with Beijing. In an exercise
codenamed Operation Summer Pulse 04, it is expected to arrange for an
unprecedented seven aircraft carrier strike groups (CSGs) to rendezvous
in waters a safe distance away from the Chinese coastline - but still
within striking distance - after mid-July.

WHAT THE NUMBERS MEAN:
ONE aircraft carrier is sent to a trouble spot as a reminder of US
presence. This was done several times in the past, when tension was high
in the Taiwan Strait.

TWO carriers show serious concern, as was the case when China test-fired
missiles over the strait in 1996.

THREE OR FOUR are sent in combat situations - as in the Gulf War in the
early 1990s and the recent Iraqi war.

Sending SEVEN carriers in peace time to the same region is
unprecedented. The US plan to do this after mid-July, in the Pacific
Ocean near China, is a message to Beijing for its threat to use force to
stop Taiwanese independence.

SEEKING FAIRNESS

Ryan was a U.S. Senate candidate in Illinois when a newspaper asked a
court to open his sealed divorce papers. He and his former wife
objected. She had made graphic accusations about sexual impropriety, and
they didn't want their 9-year- old child exposed to the titillating
details by television or someone who had read news stories. The judge
ruled against them, however, citing the millionaire Ryan's high-profile
candidacy and saying "protection from embarrassment cannot be a basis
for keeping from the public what's put in public courts. Ryan is a
Republican and the judge is a Democratic appointee. Ryan's campaign was
devastated when the details came out, and he pulled out of the race.
Polls show a Democrat probably will pick up that Republican seat, a
major development with control of the Senate hanging in the balance. The
same newspaper reportedly began considering legal action also to unseal
the records of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's divorce
from his first wife. Julia Stimson Thorne has said publicly that she had
a "suffocating marriage" to Kerry, one that left her so depressed she
wanted to kill herself. It is any- body's guess what is in the divorce
documents, however. Kerry's campaign says any attempt to put sunshine on
those records would be "gutter ball" and a "trash hunt." That may be
right, but the Democratic judge in the Ryan case thought that was OK.

grabbed her and kissed her twice -- after billing her $20 for the
service call. She said Moyer also asked her if she wanted to show him
the bedroom. "I said no and he left," she said. Franich then called
police. The five-man, one-woman jury took 90 minutes to acquit Moyer.

After thriving handsomely off the Second Amendment for decades, the
National Rifle Association has decided to invoke the First Amendment and
attempt a metamorphosis into a news media organization. It has begun a
three-hour daily show on satellite radio to broadcast its
anti-gun-control polemics in the name of legitimate news. This is a
transparent device designed to circumvent the federal campaign law's
strictures on unlimited advocacy at election time ... As distasteful as
this exercise in propaganda disguised as journalism is, it may simply be

CONVICTION AND COMPASSION

Bush Photo with Teen Shows Conviction and Compassion

Editorial by CK Rairden
May 10, 2004

It started out as a fluke.

Lynn Faulkner had been offered an extra ticket to a Bush campaign event
by his neighbor Linda Prince. Mr. Faulkner decided to offer it to his
15-year old daughter Ashley who he expected would decline, as she would
have to miss some school to attend. But his daughter surprised him.
Ashley reminded her dad how four years ago they attended a similar event
when then Texas Governor George W. Bush visited the same spot on the
campaign trail.

Ashley remembered attending that event with both her father and her
mother Wendy Faulkner. It was raining that day and they all stood in
the rain awaiting Governor Bush "eating Triscuit crackers" enjoying the
time together and hoping to get a glimpse of the would-be president.
Ashley recalled holding her mothers hand as they waited So she decided
to go again this year, but this time her mother could not attend. Wendy
Faulkner was murdered on 9/11/01 in the south tower of the World Trade
Center. She was there on the 104th floor for a one-day meeting. Ashley
decided to miss school in honor and remembrance of her mother and attend
the event.

So the trip was on. Linda Prince, along with Lynn and Ashley Faulkner,
were off to the Golden Lamb Inn in Lebanon, Ohio for the event. The
group arrived early and got a spot close to the front. As the event
wound down, the president worked the line in full campaign mode shaking
hands and signing autographs. As the president passed the group, Mr.
Faulkner got an autograph, and the president continued on until Linda
Prince spoke up, "This girl lost her mother on 9/11," Prince told the
president.

Then everything changed.

"The president's entire expression transformed," Mr. Faulkner told me on
Sunday. "He turned and came back against the flow and his eyes locked
on Ashley's. His face showed a man who was no longer the president, he
was a father and a husband." President Bush made his way back to Ashley
and he embraced the 15-yeal old young woman. "She snuggled in with the
president just like she did when she was a little girl with her dad,"
Mr. Faulkner said. "I know it's hard," Mr. Faulkner heard the president
tell his daughter. "I'm okay," Ashley told the president. The embrace
continued.

Mr. F aulkner had his Kodak digital camera with him and debated on
invading this very private moment between his daughter and the leader of
the free world. "For 20-30 seconds the president belonged exclusively
to Ashley," Lynn Faulkner told me. So he decided to capture the moment
without invading Ashley and the president's privacy. He held up his
digital camera, not even aiming with his eye and with one click snapped
just one picture. It showed in detail the face of a compassionate man
who just happens to be the president comforting a young woman who lost
her mother in the 9/11 attacks on America.

Mr. Faulkner told me that he saw tears in his daughter's eyes, and saw
emotion that he hadn't seen from his daughter in 2 years. Ashley told
her dad, "The way he was holding me, with my head against his chest, it
felt like he was trying to protect me, he wanted to make sure that I was
safe." That feeling is captured in a very clear way in this moving
unscripted photo. It's the only photo of this special embrace as the
press corps had already been ushered back on the bus. And the photo was
never meant for publication. All Mr. Faulkner did when he returned home
from the event was e-mail it to 15 friends and family. But by the
middle of last week, I had received the photo from eight different
people. Others were also receiving the photo and forwarding it along.
It became an Internet phenomonen, as it was e-mailed around America.

Mr. Faulkner called the embrace "President Bush's precious gift to my
daughter." And with his small act of e-mailing that photo to friends
and family, the picture can now become a gift to the American people.

And as sad as the story is, its release and publication is a good
thing. Disgusting photos coming out of Iraq for the past 10 days have
shocked Americans, as they should have. But no longer are the terrible
images of 9/11 shown. While the Iraq prison photos have been picked up
by the elite media and shown time and again, this touching photo has
gone largely ignored by the mainstream media. But the alternative media
has made this powerful photo one of the most e-mailed photos of last
