-Caveat Lector- What if--- all the Jews in Israel went back to Germany and Austria, Poland, and Russia and all the other countries they fled or were driven from and demanded their lands and properties and businesses back? Would that solve the problem? WWII is, after all, over. And it's true that Germany has paid some restitution. I know a number of people--most now quite elderly-- who travel to Austria and Germany in the summers because they have money that can only be spent there. However, it is also true that huge sums (if you add it all together) and innumerable art treasures and properties aquired by Jewish people and families will never be returned.
For the most part these displaced people have gone where they could, simply grateful to be alive, and started over from scratch. Many American Jews were driven out of Russia and the Ukraine at the turn of the century when they refused conscription into the Tsar's armies. In many cases, they have not even wanted to talk about the past. When they arrived here they were reviled for their poverty, having left everything behind. They populated the tenements, made pickles, pushed pushcarts and survived. Now their children are second and third generation Americans or Israelis or whatever. A high value on book learning, starting with the Torah and extending to public school and higher education, and, among the best of them, service to the community, stood many of them in good stead. In Germany, Jews were so well established, having lived there for generations, that they thought they were Germans only to discover they were not. They were only Jews. Will that happen here? It certainly is beginning to look like it could happen very easily. Do you judge all Americans by the Rockefellers? Or by Bill Gates? Or by George Bush, for that matter. There are people on this list who appear to judge all Jews by the Rothschilds. Or by Ariel Sharon. This is absurdist thinkingl. Even the rest of the world can separate their feelings toward the American people and their feelings toward our present administration. The Palestinians--or the Palestinian leadership-- seem to have an all or nothing stance. They believe the land of Israel BELONGS to them. Where do you propose that the Jews who now occupy this land should go? Or do you agree with the Palestinians that they should simply be annihilated? As I;ve said, Israel has had 200 years of peace out of 2,000--peace meaning a sharing of all the religious sites and historical resources. Once under Mulsim rule and once under Jewish rule. All the rest is a story of massacre and mayhem that some seem hellbent on continuing and repeating. A vortex of human madness. Strangest of all, to my thinking, the Zionist Christians who want the Jews to reclaim the land to rebuild the temple so they can fulfill the "prophecies" and destroy the whole world in an exclusionist Second Coming with three quarters of the world's population flung into a fiery abyss to burn for all eternity !!!!! How very nice. Do you really think Jesus would approve? I always thought he was a really nice, kind, peaceful sort of guy who talked about loving your neighbors.
