Date: Wed, 28 Jul 2004 17:17:57 -0600 Please excuse my late reply as I had to visit my doctor, a specialist in South Dakota, and such a trip and my poor health leave me fatigued enough that I stayed off the net. This material seems to be based upon what I term the 'iceberg' theory of human events which says that most of the forces which effect the world are in fact hidden 'under the surface' and that the power structures we see are but the smaller portion of a larger mass. Makow, who I regard most unfavorably, extends this to add the idea that no process or institution can, by it's structure tend towards a specific direction, and in fact that no set of events may really be defined as a trend, but that all are directed by some human purposeful scheme. In effect, MadCow regards the WHOLE world as a plot, and all sociological phenomenon as manifestations of this plot. There is another far more widespread theory which implies that effectively, there is NOTHING 'under the surface'. There are quite legitimate reasons for being wary of what is 'under the surface'. Effectively, what is under the surface is what someone wants hidden. What is under the surface is by definition, not seen clearly. There is great advantage to acting according to known facts. In some countries, nobody who is either informed or responsible for anything important can assume that there is nothing under the surface. Few Americans would say that a Russian is a nut if he believes that not everything in his country is aboveboard. Many Russians are in fact forced to act according to incomplete and often false information because people are inaccurate in their observations, because of incomplete information, or because of someone's deception, but they cannot simply pretend that no scheming goes on. The US division of powers in government has allowed Americans to ignore what is under the surface to a considerable degree because a malevolent scheme may come to nothing. As the government has grown in size however, the 'balance of power' has become not very balanced, with the absolute amount of power within the government very high. This would normally only increase the magnitude of the plots and schemes within the power structure, but it is socially acceptable only to believe in fewer surreptitious schemes than it was one or two hundred years ago. Of course the idea that nothing is schemed would deny reality so greatly as to be unsustainable, and so a modifier is introduced in much the same way as Makow modifies his paranoia. Makow says that everything he dislikes is a plot, i.e. "immorality in movies", but pretends that the Hollywood film codes of the 30's and beyond were not a preplanned scheme by a small group of influential people and the American herd imagines that foreigners are plotting against them in the manner of a comic book villain. So Bin Laden becomes primarily a religious fanatic trying to take over the world rather than a religious Saudi who wants US troops out of his country and who wants to overthrow the monarchy. A popular leftist variation on this is that the "Wahabist menace" is attempting to take over the world. Doubtless without this "menacing" religious faction, everyone would be happy to fall into line with American policy around the world! This is similar to the portrayal of the revolution in Iran. Supposedly, the Iranians were just religious maniacs rather than that most everyone in Iran was sick of the faux, but impious royal tyrant and his torturers and secret police. This propaganda does strengthen the hand of religious conservatives. Most everyone was involved in the Iranian revolution including many secularist leftists, but the religious fanatic propaganda served to lionize those conservatives that there were and tip the balance of power to the point that these subsequently went on to dominate the government. A similar process is taking place with Bin Laden And Al Qaida and it is not clear where this process will stop. I do not believe that the present trends in the nature of perceived political truth in America bode especially well for it's future. There is a sort of Hegelian centrifuge at work which separates people into those who believe that all of perceived reality is simply a cloak for evil demigods, and people who will accept any explanation or justification for government policy.
