(B (J
(B (JOver the past several decades we Democrats have had to get used to repeated
(B (Jaccusations that we are immoral and evil and responsible for everything bad
(B (Jin the world -- the Clinton impeachment was the culmination of this. I think
(B (Jthat it's time to turn the guns around.
(B (J
(B (JBack in 1994 on the eve of a midterm election, House Speaker Newt Gingrich
(B (Jused the horrifying case of Susan Smith, who had killed her two young
(B (Jchildren in hopes of being united with her lover, as evidence that the
(B (JDemocrats were ruining the country, saying: "How a mother can kill her two
(B (Jchildren,14 months and 3 years, in hopes that her boyfriend would like her
(B (Jis just a sign of how sick the system is, and I think people want to change.
(B (JThe only way you get change is to vote Republican."
(B (J
(B (JGingrich's charge that Smith's murder of her children had something to do
(B (Jwith the Democratic Party was deluded and slanderous from the start, and
(B (Jmost thought that capitalizing politically on such a horrible event was
(B (Jdisgusting. This did not keep the media from publicizing his claim, however,
(B (Jand for all anyone knows Gingrich's smear tipped some votes the Republicans'
(B (Jway. In any case, the election was a big victory for Newt.
(B (J
(B (JOnly after the election did the real facts come out. Susan Smith's
(B (Jstepfather, Beverly Russell, was far from a Democrat: he was a figure of
(B (Jsome importance in the South Carolina Republican Party and in Pat
(B (JRobertson's Christian Coalition. This revelation alone invalidated
(B (JGingrich's ludicrous argument; but on top of this it turned out that Russell
(B (Jhad been molesting Smith for years, starting when Smith was in her middle
(B (Jteens.*
(B (J
(B (JOddly enough, once the reality became known, the media mostly dropped the
(B (Jstory. Imaginary and wildly false charges against Democrats are OK, but when
(B (Jactual facts show up implicating Republicans, then it is time to
(B (Jshowrestraint and good taste and consideration for the family's feelings.
(B (JYou can go figure this one out for yourself.**
(B (J
(B (JAs we know, bizarre and creepy family life is actually quite common among
(B (Jconservatives. For Exhibit B, let's look at the Schmitz family of southern
(B (JCalifornia, the most famous member of which is May Kay LeTourneau -- a
(B (Jmarried schoolteacher and mother now in prison for sexual abuse of a
(B (Jsixth-grade student, by whom she has borne two children (one conceived while
(B (Jshe was out on parole).
(B (J
(B (J$B".(J 'Can$B".(Jt you understand that this is not a story about me,' an unrepentant
(B (JLeTourneau told George magazine. 'It$B".(Js a story of two remarkable men.' Those
(B (Jwould be her thirteen-year-old student and her domineering father, both of
(B (Jwhom LeTourneau loved beyond reason".
(B (J
(B (JLeTourneau's father was John G. Schmitz, a John Birch Society member who
(B (Jserved in the California State Senate as a Republican from 1964 to 1970 and
(B (Jin Congress from 1970 to 1972. In 1972 he ran from the right for president
(B (Jagainst Nixon, getting about a million votes. This did not keep him from
(B (Jreturning to the California State Senate as a Republican from 1978 to 1982;
(B (Jin 1984 he ran again for Congress, but was defeated by Bob Dornan (who for
(B (Jonce in his life could pose as a moderate).
(B (J
(B (JUnsurprisingly, Schmitz's personal ethics were hardly congruent with his
(B (Jpious political rhetoric. His political career was ended mostly by the
(B (Jrevelation that, besides his public family-values family (five children), he
(B (Jhad another, secret family consisting of a German ex-student of his and two
(B (Jmore children. (In a bizarre twist, their infant son was found by child
(B (Jwelfare agents to have a peculiarly mutilated penis, the reasons for which
(B (Jwere never explained.) His comment on all this was simply $B".(JI ought to get
(B (Jthe Right to Life man-of-the-year award for this.$B".(J After retiring from his
(B (Jother career in teaching , Schmitz moved to the Washington D.C. area, where
(B (Jhe bought a house which had once belonged to Senator Joe McCarthy of
(B (JWisconsin -- his political idol.
(B (J
(B (JThere's still another chapter to the story. John G. Schmitz's son John P.
(B (JSchmitz did not share his father's disdain for George Bush, whom he served
(B (Jas Deputy Counsel from 1984 to 1993. He was involved in Iran Contra as a
(B (Jdeputy to C. Boyden Gray (and as an associate of Janet Rehnquist). Schmitz's
(B (Jwas one of the few Iran-Contra players to refuse to be interviewed by the
(B (Jindependent counsel, and was highly instrumental, as was Rehnquist, in
(B (Jprotecting Bush. Bush was never questioned, and a diary he kept was never
(B (Jexamined; Walsh's final report read "The criminal investigation of Bush was
(B (Jregrettably incomplete"
(B (J(Chapter 28, second paragraph ).
(B (J
(B (JSince then, John P. Schmitz has popped up every once in awhile. He seems to
(B (Jhave had dealings with Iraq before the Gulf War, and with his present law
(B (Jfirm has worked for Enron, Bayer (producer of Cipro), and United Airlines
(B (J(9/11 lawsuit); his firm also has a Central Asian office in Tashkent.
(B (JSchmitz, along with many men of high repute, is a member of the boards of
(B (Jdirectors of the American Council on Germany and the Atlantic Council of the
(B (JUS.
(B (J
(B (JSome may ask why I'm willing to get down in the gutter with these guys. The
(B (Janswer is that right now I'm playing the game the way it's played, but that
(B (JI'm more than willing to declare a truce -- although somehow I just don't
(B (Jthink that's going to happen. Democrats and liberals have been having shit
(B (Jflicked at us pretty continually now for decades, and people should know
(B (Jthat there's plenty of shit on both sides.
(B (J
(B (JIt would be nice if our conservative Christian friends suddenly came to be
(B (Jfilled with the milk of human kindness, or even if they started to play
(B (Jfair, but it would also be nice if Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy were
(B (Jreal. So as far as I'm concerned, it should be an eye for an eye and a tooth
(B (Jfor a tooth from here on out -- or at least until the Tooth Fairy shows up.

(B (J
(B (J* Googling "Susan Smith" / "Beverly Russell" brings up only about 40 stories
(B (Jon the case, all but four of them from left-wing or secular-humanist
(B (Jadvocacy sites. The only major-media story, from CNN, does not mention
(B (JBeverly Russell's close ties to the Christian Coalition and to the South
(B (JCarolina Republican Party.
(B (J
(B (J** In a coincidence that really isn't as strange as it may seem, at the time
(B (Jwhen the killings took place, Smith's stepfather Russell was already under
(B (Jinvestigation for the misuse of tax-exempt funds in Pat Robertson's
(B (Jpolitical campaign.
