From: Ken Nash Subject: Building Bridges: Unprecedented-The Florida Election Debacle Date: Sun, 29 Aug 2004 18:50:08 -0400 Building Bridges: Your Community and Labor Report - National Edition Produced by Mimi Rosenberg and Ken Nash presents UNPRECENDENTED: THE FLORIDA ELECTION DEBACLE & THINGS TO COME with producers Joan Sekler & Richard Perez For those who regard the 2000 presidential contest as a stolen election, the film "Unprecendented" supplies a dossier of revealing facts about the Florida recount. Especially telling in the is film is the story of the tens of thousands of Black voters who were illegally but strategically disqualified as "convicted felons." Also included now is new material on electronic voting to help prepare us for this year's battle. From: Tom Siblo Date: Mon, 30 Aug 2004 RE: 100s of Thousands Say NO to the Bush Agenda WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS FOR THE U.S. ANTI-WAR MOVEMENT? DOES DEMOCRACY MATTER? By Tom Siblo The March in New York City is a resounding success with some 400,000 protestors. This is the largest turn out since the mass demonstrations of the Freeze movement of the 1980s. Just what have we learned about the current war in Iraq and the Bush Administration response to our movement? The only way to stop Bush is to defeat him at the polls this November. However, as a movement we are united as far as defeating Bush or how to go about defeating his right wing politics which he represents. After the nightmare election of November 2000 we have known that the great majority of Americans do not support George Bush yet he won. He won not in the election booths but in the legal halls of U.S. Supreme Court. The election process is rigged. It is rigged for the highest bidder and for the person with the most amount of money. This is because the much needed Federal and State election funding reforms are without any impact. We need to all recognize that as long as any candidate for office can receive funding from private corporate sources there will never be any real free elections within the United States. The truth is that as long as a few corporations can donate millions of dollars to a Presidential campaign then all the efforts of 450,000 or even 100 million citizens have little or no impact on the election process. George Bush Jr. is outspending the Kerry campaign because it has amassed the largest amount of funding in our entire nation's history. The more money you have the more you can spend and line the pockets of the mass media. Already look at the difference between the ways CNN is covering the Republican National Convention. This is true with Fox and all the others. So this begs the question. If money is used to buy the White House and the Congress as well as the rest the state, municipal and local elections then what chance does an independent candidate have of gaining enough money and donations to make an impressive showing at the voting booths? I have all my life supported the mass demonstrations and I have added another feature to my political perspectives and that is building with a long view. Had we started after the defeat in 2000 to work on getting laws passed that will completely eliminate corporate funding for candidates and put into place public funding to all who obtain enough signatures from registered voters to be nominated for a specific federal or state office then the face of American politics would be transformed significantly. Those who do a good job will be reelected and those who do will never get nominated. It is simple as that, however this fall we have no such law in place and this is why what was in 2000 a tragedy will now become truly a farce. This is why I am joining the Democracy Matters movement and I think everyone on this list should donate to Democracy Matters and encourage young people to organize chapters on their campuses to begin organizing for clean elections as well as setting up debates between the various candidates and organize voter registration drives. Democracy Matters works with both students and within the community and it is important to stress now that whoever wins this November does not mean the struggle for reform of the electoral process is over. I believe it is just beginning. If anything the past four years have taught us is this anytime someone is appointed to an elected position he or she does not have to be responsive to the interests or the needs of the people or the electorate. George Bush Jr. has shown us that such is the case as it has always been throughout history. In order to get a better idea why I am supporting Democracy Matters I have attached the URL of their website. http://www.democracymatters.org/ . I am looking forward to this fall being one of the most active and progressive within our history. It is my hope that we can finally unite together and defeat those who are trying to destroy what all of hope and need from our government and return it back to the hands of the people where it should have always been left. Sometimes it takes time for us to realize just what exactly going on. The most important feature of the mass demonstration this past Sunday is that Iraq, unemployment, and poverty are still real and important issues to the American people rather than what is promoted within the mass media and the press. Democracy does matter and it is up to us to make sure that it only gets stronger in the days, months and years ahead.
