That wasn't the 40s and 50s, I was single and working then.  In most cases I
knew, there were two adults working 40 hours per week.  That did the job
nicely, and if one worked days and one worked nights, it made it even better,
because it cost nothing for child care.  You're right though, life was a lot
more pleasant than it must be today when both parents have several jobs.
