CAFTA: In the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) mold.
The 10 year record of NAFTA's broken promises is working against the
proponents of a Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). NAFTA (the
North American Free Trade Agreement linking Mexico, Canada and the United
States (U.S.)) has proven disastrous for America, undermining all of our
basic resource industries, spurring a massive exodus of U.S. manufacturing
plants and jobs, and vastly increasing the influx of illegal aliens into
the U.S.
Proponents of these trade pacts claim that a primary objective is to
negotiate a mutual lowering of tariff barriers that will benefit U.S.
exports. In a December 17, 2003 press release, U.S. Trade representative
Robert Zoellick stated that "CAFTA will streamline trade; promote
investment; slash tariffs on goods; remove barriers to trade in
services"... "But Central America can't provide important markets for
American exports. Alan Tonelson, a Research Fellow at the U.S. Business &
Industry Educational Foundation, put the economies of our CAFTA partners
in perspective.
"EL Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica are not
only among the world's poorest countries, they're among its smallest
economies as well. Measured by their ability to buy U.S. Product, their
combined economic output totaled only $62 Billion, according to the latest
(2002) data. That's less than the output of Orlando Fl. or Bergen County
NJ."
The real export facilitated by CAFTA, as with NAFTA, will be the
relocation of more American Jobs and manufacturing to serve American
Consumers who have not yet lost their livelihoods.
