Soldiers go over the top into hell
By NED PARKER and PATRICK BAZ in Fallujah
November 10, 2004

AFTER a night of pounding Fallujah, 10,000 US and Iraqi troops scrambled over a
railway embankment
on the city's outskirts.

They immediately confronted insurgents armed with rocket-propelled grenades and
had to fight street
by street through an ancient maze.

The most significant battle since Baghdad fell 19 months ago began two hours
after sunset.

In a two-pronged attack, heavy fire ripped through the notorious Jolan district
in the northwest as
a separate force took control of Fallujah's railway station in the northeast.

As the marines edged closer to Jolan, at least four 900kg bombs were dropped in
the northwest of the
city.

The marines poured into a complex of several buildings, including two apartment
blocks, a school, a
mosque and a government building, in the sector.

Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi authorised the operation, dubbed "Phantom
Fury", seven months after
an initial attempt by the US military to reclaim the rebel nerve centre ended
in a stalemate.

Ending weeks of anticipation, Iraqi troops and US marines seized control of
Fallujah's main hospital
during a pre-dawn offensive on Monday, triggering a day of clashes that led to
an all-out assault as
night fell.

Missiles rained down on the city, with the action most intense in the Askari
district in the
northeast and Jolan in the northwest.

"They are in the process of incinerating the sector," a Jolan resident said.

Iraq's Defence Minister Sheik Hazem Shaalan warned worse was to follow as the
US-backed Government
battled to retake the city, the symbol of an insurgency bent on undermining its
plans to hold
elections by January.

"Tomorrow is the large-scale operation to retake the city," he said.

"We've called it operation Dawn. God willing, it's going to be a new, happy
dawn for the people of
Fallujah."

Mr Shaalan said some insurgents had fled the city, but vowed they would be
captured.

Just before the battle started, Mr Allawi visited the thousands of Iraqi troops
camped around
Fallujah.

"Your job is to arrest the killers but if you kill them, then let it be," he
said.

"You need to avenge the victims of the terrorists like the 37 children who were
killed in Baghdad
and the 49 of your colleagues who were slaughtered," he said, referring to two
of the deadliest
attacks unleashed by insurgents loyal to Iraq's most wanted militant and
al-Qaeda frontman Abu Musab
al-Zarqawi.

Iraqi and US officials believe al-Zarqawi and his followers have turned
Fallujah into a base.

They gave residents an ultimatum to surrender the militants or face assault.

Many of Fallujah's 300,000 residents are thought to have fled to surrounding
areas or Baghdad as
living conditions deteriorated and fears of the assault, which has been in the
pipeline for months,
grew.

Doctors inside the besieged city painted a grim picture of a chronic lack of
medical equipment,
trained staff, water and electricity.

"All of the surgeons in the city are locked in the general hospital and are not
permitted to return
to Fallujah," said Dr Hashem Issawi, who works in one of just two functioning
medical clinics.

"Ambulances have also been confiscated. We lack material and equipment."

Medics said 12 people had been killed and 30 wounded in the day-long
bombardment, while Mr Allawi
said 38

militants had died around the western fringe of the city as US and Iraqi troops
secured the hospital
and two bridges.

US commanders estimate that 2000 to 2500 fighters, some loyal to Zarqawi, are
inside the city and
its surrounding areas, ready to fight. The US military believes that another
10,000 men could join
in the battle.

General George Casey, commander of US forces in Iraq, said insurgents had
erected defences on the
"outer crust" of the city, but believed they would fall back toward the centre
for the major
confrontation.

"Our intelligence is telling us they have lined some of the streets with
explosive devices and
placed car bombs around the city," he said.
