Built in 1852, this is the last survivor of the imposing private homes which once lined lower Fifth Avenue and is an outstanding example of Italianate style. Since 1917 it has been home to the Salmagundi Club, an artists' club founded in 1871. http://www.gvccc.com/tours.west.html

The colloquial French name for a highly seasoned cold salad. Salmagundi was a favorite food of the Caribbean Buccaneers, who carried it north to the Atlantic and east to West Africa and Madagascar. Bartholomew Roberts was eating salmagundi for breakfast when he was rudely interrupted by the British Navy off the coast of West Africa in 1722.

The strong seasonings and added variety to a diet of dried and smoked foods. Meat of any kind, including turtle, duck, or pigeon, was roasted, chopped into chunks, and marinated in spiced wine. Imported salted meat, herring, and anchovies also were added. When ready to serve, the smoked and salted meats were combined with hard-boiled eggs and whatever fresh or picked vegetables w ere available, including palm hearts, cabbage, mangos, onions, and olives. Salmagundi: mixture or miscellany
Though this is now used mainly in a figurative sense, it was first attached in English to a dish of chopped meat, anchovies and eggs, garnished with onions, lemon juice, oil and other condiments. A right dog’s breakfast, in fact. We know that the word came to us in the seventeenth century from the French salmigondis, of which older spellings in that language were salmiguondin and salmingondin. Here the line of linguistic footprints ceases, and we must cast about to pick up the trail again. One theory is that it was a dish first prepared for the French king Henri IV (or Henri VI in another version) by a nobleman’s wife, after whom it was named. Another, more prosaic but more plausible, is that it derives from the Italian phrase salame conditi, “pickled meat”. Yet another says it comes from the French salemine, “salted food” and condir, “to season”. In English the name was corrupted to Solomon-gundy in the eighteenth century, and it’s probable that it’s related to the name in the children’s rhyme: “Solomon Grundy, born on a Monday, christened on Tuesday, married on Wednesday, took ill on Thursday, worse on Friday, died on Saturday, buried on Sunday, that is the end of Solomon Grundy”, which was first set down by James Orchard Halliwell in 1842. http://www.worldwidewords.org/weirdwords/ww-sal1.htm

San Francisco as the Center of West Coast Art
August 17 through October 13, 2002, the Hearst Art Gallery takes us back a hundred and thirty years, to a time when post-Gold Rush California was developing its culture. At the center of this still rough-and-tumble Athens was the Bohemian Club, chartered in 1872. Its founding members included newspapermen, a vintner, a printer, artists, an actor-manager, a poet, and a few men of business. Among them were such names as Ambrose Bierce, Daniel O'Connell, Joaquin Miller, and Henry George. Mark Twain and Bret Harte were honorary members, and in the next generation Jack London and Frank Norris also joined. But the club's most notable creativity was among its members who worked in the visual arts.
The works on display date from the Bohemian Club's strongest period, from the 1870s to about 1915. Artists exhibited include Samuel Marsden Brookes, Norton Bush, Giuseppe Cadenasso, Maynard Dixon, Paul Frenzeny, Percy Grey, Thomas Hill, Christian Jorgensen, William Keith, Lorenzo Latimer, Xavier Martinez, Gottardo Piazzoni, Granville Redman, William Ritschel, Julian Rix, H. E. Smith, Jules Tavernier, Frank van Sloun, Virgil Williams, and Theodore Wores.
