MYSTERY OF APACHE CRASHES DEEPENS
=================================

(CNNS, 05/06/99) -- Two Apache helicopters have recently,
mysteriously, crashed in the Yugoslav region. According to UPI,
"NATO has not yet released the cause of either crash." [1] UPI
reports that the choppers may have crashed due to "a material
failure, pilot error, or a bird or wire strike..." [2]

CNNS source Rhea Fortean (pseudonym) has reminded this news
service that an Apache aircraft also recently crashed here in the
United States.

The cause or causes of the Apache crashes are not yet being told.
As with all cases where the U.S. government withholds
information, this invites theorizing as to what caused the
crashes. (Often, too, even when the government does make public
its information, theorizing still occurs since the government is
not always a credible source of information.)

What did bring down the Apaches? As cited above, UPI reports
that a random, flying bird could have sent one of the choppers
down. Are the Serbs using arsenals of kamikaze birds as part of
their air-defense? Did a clandestine Serb unit penetrate into
Albania and release a flock of geese at a strategic moment?

Or did, possibly, a lone Serb with a sling-shot score a direct
hit on one of the low-flying choppers?

This news service speculates that pilots of the Apaches are to be
used as kamikaze pilots over Yugoslavia, and that some of these
pilots have become over-eager and are crashing their helicopters
ahead of schedule. (See previous CNNS report, "Crashing Apaches
Are Kamikazes?", 05/05/99, available at our web site, listed at
bottom of this article.) If overzealous kamikaze pilots are
indeed the cause of the crashes, shouldn't we skip the training
phase and send the Apaches right now to fly over Yugoslavia?
After all, at least if they crash over there they might take out
a traffic light or a stop sign in the process.

Reportedly, native American Apaches are incensed that their
tribal name has been linked to the infamous aircraft. They are
said to believe that the choppers are giving their tribe a bad
name.

Speculation is rampant as to what exactly is causing the Apache
helicopters, manufactured by Boeing, to keep crashing.
Privately, the "buzz" (whispered talk) refers to the choppers as
"Flying Coffins."

As noted in the previous CNNS report, Mother Jones magazine has
detailed how the choppers, when fully loaded with fuel and
ammunition, have a *negative* Vertical Rate Of Climb (VROC).
This means, according to Mother Jones, that the Apache "Attack"
Helicopters not only have trouble gaining altitude, but have
trouble maintaining altitude. Is this why they are so inclined
to crash?

But according to his European sources, CNNS special correspondent
Sherman Skolnick indicates that the true cause of the crashes may
be "actual in-fighting in U.S. Military wherein some are shooting
at EACH OTHER." Skolnick cautions that such in-fighting as cause
of the crashes sounds hard to believe, but adds that "some in a
position to know believe it to be true."

According to UPI's report, "The accidents will not affect NATO's
use of the Apaches when Supreme Allied Commander Europe Gen.
Wesley Clark asks for them... This doesn't alter any plans..."
[3] But according to the CBS Evening News broadcast of May 5,
1999, "Even before the latest crash, the Pentagon was having
second thoughts about sending the choppers into combat. One
senior officer says the added firepower does not justify the risk
of flying low and slow over Kosovo." (After all, the Serbs are
known to be armed with sling-shots and bows-and-arrows.)

So what *did* cause the choppers to crash? At this time, we are
not being told, officially, why the "Flying Coffins" keep
self-destructing. And even if/when the official word comes out,
it's veracity is likely to be doubted. Thus arise "conspiracy
theories," as a populist method of guessing the truth.
