-Caveat Lector- President's Plane Avoids Collision LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A small commuter plane approaching Air Force One as it was preparing to land at Los Angeles on Saturday prompted the president's plane to quickly ascend 400 feet and turn left to avoid possibly coming too close. The two planes never violated the 1,000-foot vertical separation requirement, White House spokesman Joe Lockhart said. ``This was not a near-miss by any calculation,'' he said. ``They at all times maintained required separation.'' He said the president, who was aboard, was never in danger. Air Force One is equipped with TCAS system, a traffic collision avoidance mechanism which alerted the pilot that the oncoming commuter plane was ascending to 9,000 feet just as Air Force One was descending to 10,000.
