No throne but plenty of ammunition

NICOLA KOZ and JAN HENNOP

ALBANIA's exiled King Leka I, who lives in Johannesburg,
surrounds himself with heavily armed bodyguards wherever he goes.
Described by some as an "entrepreneur", the Fourways
businessman is the son of King Zog, a former army officer who, in
1928, crowned himself Albania's first king, 16 years after this
former province of the Ottoman empire became autonomous.
Zog fled the country 11 years later, allegedly with the
country's gold, when the Italian fascist leader Benito
Mussolini's troops invaded. Leka was only three days old at the
time.
Schooled in Egypt, Leka was trained at the British military
academy Sandhurst and had the late King Faisal of Saudi Arabia as
a godfather.
He was obviously being groomed [from birth] to retake the
throne.
The so-called royal minister of court, Abedin Mulosmanaj,
once said: "From the moment he was born there was a gun under
his pillow and he has worn it all his life."
According to reports, Leka has been open [in the past]
about the "army in exile" he built here and in Spain.
He inherited the Albanian crown in 1961 on the death of his
father and has spent most of his life in exile, mostly in
various European countries.
In 1979 Leka was expelled from Spain. He lived briefly in
the then Rhodesia until the Albanian-trained troops of Robert
Mugabe took power, and was later jailed in Thailand on charges
related to gunrunning.
He moved to South Africa with his wife, Queen Susan, and
their family in the early 1980s.
In recent years Leka has devoted a large part of his time to
politics and the restoration of the monarchy in Albania.
He returned to Albania in April 1997 after nearly 60 years
in exile when the government authorised his return. He visited
the rebel-held Vlore to test support for his bid to restore the
monarchy to the lawless republic.
However, he accused the country's socialists of robbing him
of victory after he lost in the referendum..
The Socialist Party leader, Fatos Nano, in turn accused Leka
and the autocratic right-wing president, Sali Berisha, of
conspiring to foment the chaos that erupted across the country in
1997 after the collapse of notorious pyramid schemes in which
over half of all Albanians had invested money.
Leka returned to South Africa after the referendum but,
before his departure from the country he claims is his kingdom,
he said: "I'll never really leave Albania. If the monarchy loses
I'll have to go back to Johannesburg as I have a lot of work."
During his first visit (in April 1997) thousands of people
were massed in to the main square when his motorcade made an
entrance to the port, the centre of Albania's insurrection
against President Sali Berisha. He reportedly strode through the
crowd to place a wreath at the grave of Ismail Qemali, the father
of Albania's independence.

HARD-CORE CACHE: Some of the weapons seized from Leka's house in
Fourways. Picture Jon Hrusa.

CALL TO ARMS: Leka Zog, the would-be king of Albania, wearing a
paramilitary camouflage uniform and weaponary as he talks to a
crowd in central Tirana. Leka will wil appear in a Randburg court
tomorrow following his arrest for possession of illegal weapons.
