BOOKS

The following is a list of books available to clinicians and to survivors
with Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD). I do not agree with some of the
current therapeutic attitudes toward individuals with MPD. I encourage people
to take what they like from these books and leave the rest.

On Multiple Personality Disorder

Braun, Bennett G. Treatment of Multiple Personality Disorder Washington,
D.C.: American Psychiatric Press, 1986. A technical book for clinicians.

Cohen, Barry, Esther Giller, and Lynn W. Multiple Personality Disorder from
the Inside Out. Baltimore, MD: The Sidran Press, 1991. A collection of
personal accounts of individuals with multiple personality disorder. A useful
book for survivors and for therapists.

Gil, Eliana. United We Stand: A Book for People with Multiple Personalities.
Walnut Creek, CA: Launch Press, 1990. A simplistic book for survivors and
others interested in multiple personalities.

Kluft, Richard. Childhood Antecedents of Multiple Personality Disorder
Washington, D.C.: American Psychiatric Press, 1985. A technical book for
therapists.

Putnam, Frank W Diagnosis and Treatment of Multiple Personality Disorder New
York: Guilford Press, 1989. A technical book for clinicians.

Ross, Colin A. Multiple Personality Disorder: Diagnosis, Clinical Features,
and Treatment. New York: John Wiley and Sons, 1989. A technical book for
clinicians.

On Ritual Abuse

Again, I do not necessarily agree with some of the following approaches to
the subject of ritual abuse. However, I include these books as resources
because I believe some of the information in each book is valuable.

Hudson, Pamela, L.C.SW Ritual Child Abuse: Discovery, Diagnosis, and
Treatment. Saratoga, CA: R&E Publishers, 1991. This book is designed to help
professionals work with children who have been ritually abused. Includes a
survey of ritual abuse symptoms and abuse allegations. Available from R&E
Publishers, P.O. Box 2008, Saratoga, CA 95070. Phone: (408) 866-6303.

Kahaner, Larry. Cults That Kill. New York: Warner Books, 1988. A book
combining quotes from a variety of police officers and professionals who
investigate satanic crime. Some of the book addresses allegations of ritual
abuse.

Raschke, Carl. Painted Black. San Francisco: HarperCollins, 1990. An in-depth
examination of satanism in America.

Sackeim, David K. and Susan E. Devine. Out of Darkness. New York: Lexington
Books, 1992. Addresses in detail the therapeutic, legal, and historical
issues surrounding ritual abuse.

Smith, Michelle and Larry Pazder, M.D. Michelle Remembers. New York: Pocket
Books, 1980. A personal account of a child abused in a satanic cult, as told
by the survivor and her therapist. Strong Christian focus, including the use
of exorcism.

Spencer, Judith. Suffer the Child. New York: Pocket Books, 1989. A personal
account of a child abused in a satanic cult. The book was not actually
written by the survivor.

On Cult Mind Control

Galanter, Marc. Cults: Faith, Healing and Coercion. New York: Oxford
University Press, 1989.

Hassan, Steven. Combating Mind Control. Rochester, VT. Park Street Press,
1988.

General: Child Abuse and Recovery

Bass, Ellen and Laura Davis. The Courage to Heal. New York: HarperCollins, 2d
ed., 1992. An excellent book for any person confronting sexual abuse memories
from childhood. The bibliography in the 1992 edition is extensive and
thorough. I encourage every survivor to get a copy of this book.

Bass, Ellen and Louise Thornton. I Never Told Anyone. New York:
HarperCollins, 1991. Another excellent book describing the pain and betrayal
experienced by incest survivors. The introduction to the book describes in
detail societal influence and attitudes regarding sexual abuse. An empowering
book.

Davis, Laura. The Courage to Heal Workbook. New York: HarperCollins, 1990. An
excellent book that helps survivors actively participate in their own healing
process.

Gil, Eliana. Outgrowing the Pain. Walnut Creek, CA: Launch Press, 1984. A
simplistic book for survivors of child abuse.

SUPPORT GROUPS

Contact your local rape crisis team to find a support group, or ask
therapists in your area who work with ritual abuse survivors. Open groups
that are not run by safe facilitators may need to be avoided.

Some survivors say that violent cults attempt to infiltrate open groups.

Survivors of ritual abuse may want to contact their local rape crisis team to
find out if volunteers are trained on the topic of ritual abuse. If they are
trained on ritual abuse, use the twenty-four-hour hot line for support. If
they are not, you may want to educate them by introducing them to
audiocassettes or literature on the topic.

THERAPISTS

Reaching Out has an audiocassette called "Therapy: Finding a Therapist and
Getting Your Needs Met" that can give you some good tips for finding a
qualified therapist. The tape is also helpful for survivors interested in
evaluating the quality of their current therapeutic relationship. You may
also use the techniques in The Courage to Heat Workbook by Laura Davis (see
listing above) to interview and assess your feelings about a potential
therapist. Reaching Out also has a resource guide you can order, which lists
therapists trained on ritual abuse. All therapists completed a questionnaire
to determine their education and attitude toward ritual abuse. The results of
the questionnaire are included in the resource guide. Please write to:
Reaching Out, 1296 E. Gibson Road, #218, Woodland, CA 95776. If you are a
therapist interested in being presented on this list, please contact Reaching
Out as soon as possible.

You may also want to contact your local rape crisis team to get names of
therapists in your area who work with incest survivors. You may choose to
train a therapist on ritual abuse using audiocassettes and books.

PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITALS/TRAUMA CENTERS

Educate yourself about a particular psychiatric hospital before you check
yourself into it. You are a consumer, and the hospital is providing you with
a service. Ask questions about the use of medication, attitudes toward
memories and abreaction, attitudes toward extreme emotion, and so on, and
attempt to verify the answers by touring the ward and asking more specific
questions. Remember, MPD is not a psychosis. It is a curable defense to
extreme trauma.

Be cautious about taking medication for a prolonged length of time. I suggest
that survivors use outpatient resources, such as therapists and rape crisis
teams, for support whenever possible. A number of survivors have reported
being revictimized in psychiatric hospitals.

Cottonwood de Albuquerque
804 Blythe Road

Cottonwood is a trauma center as opposed to a psychiatric hospital. The
program is to help traumatized individuals release their pain. It is for
