GEORGE W BUSH, the front-runner for the Republican presidential
nomination, was forced to defend himself yesterday from accusations that he
was given special treatment to avoid fighting in Vietnam.

The allegations, in one of America's most respected newspapers, show that
media scrutiny of the early favourite in the race for the White House will be
every bit as close as that devoted to Bill Clinton in 1992.

The Los Angeles Times said Mr Bush had
been given preferential treatment when he
applied to join the Texas Air National
Guard, a reserve unit, in 1968 while he
was still a student at Yale University.

Young American men desperate to avoid
Vietnam were attracted to the national
guard units because they counted as
military service but were very unlikely to
be sent to South-East Asia. This was
especially true of the air national guard,
which tended to use outdated aircraft and
took responsibility for defence of their
home states.

The newspaper said Mr Bush, then 21, had far fewer qualifications to become
an officer and pilot cadet in the guard than others. It pointed out that his
father, who became president in 1988, was in 1968 a Congressman
representing Houston, Texas.

A spokesman for the Bush campaign said the newspaper had erred because it
was looking at the qualifications needed to become an officer in the Army
National Guard. The LA Times also said George W Bush, who is now the
governor of Texas, had been selected for a fast-track recruitment process that
won him a commission immediately.

As the paper put it: "Doors were opened and good fortune flowed to him at
opportune times". He was the only reservist among about 70 trainee officers
at the year-long pilot school in Georgia to fly F-102 fighters.

Mr Bush, campaigning in New Hampshire, denied any suggestion of
favouritism, saying he had joined the guard because he "wanted to fly
fighters". Brig Gen Buck Staudt, then commander of the guard, is quoted as
saying: "There was no influence on his behalf. Neither his daddy nor anybody
else got him into the guard."
