Chip Delaney wrote about this in BABEL-17 about 35 years ago - the
un-wired become the dispossessed, riff-raff, possibly justifying their
self-disenfranchisement with claims of "cultural purity". But, just
as cretinists will have no place in the biotech revolution, those who
shun Borgification will be irrelevant to the integrated global economy
[economy <-- oikonomia <-- household rules]. They probably won't even
be able to find fulfilling careers in the food-service and building-
maintenance industries, and will only have an impact on the rest of
mankind via intermittant terrorist acts. Meanwhile, that "rest of
humanity" bunch will be immensely productive, protected, proactive,
and swarm out into the universe. Will we leave Terra to ther dim kin?

So, we're breeding/building some fast-evolving silicon intelligences
that we'll do our best to integrate within our [bioengineered] selves
- or will they take off, supplant us, as Hans Moravec and others say?
And as bioengineering and cognitive enhancement and Borgification lead
to a net of silicon/human/cetacean/simian/protean intelligences, will
concern for "natural humanity" be relevant? Pretty soon we'll be able
to rebuild ourselves into whatever race/gender/species we want, and
all the current debates about ethnicity/sexuality will be on par with
arguing about counting angels on pinheads [measure the width of the
pin; measure the width of the angel's arse; divide a by b] or debating
whether evil is a substance and will it splash on you - y'know, usenet
stuff. #8-) The next important questions may be: who goes Borg first?
Can we get off-planet fast enough to avoid biosphere meltdown? Whose
philosophical coalitions will control which moons, which quadrants of
the asteroid belt and Oort cloud, which paths to galactic expansion?
Conspiratorialists may blame the upcoming changes on Illuminati or
Bilderbergers or Jewish/Marxist/Satanist/Reptilioid forces or such.
Hah. People with the chance to participate in these changes will, as
you point out, DEMAND to be included in Borgification, because that's
the best shot at immortality, empowerment, meaningfulness, relevance.
Transformation is inevitible. Resistance is futile.
