-Caveat Lector-
Yes, DG, I meant that humorously; I've seen a few goats in my time &
I've seen what they can do to a garden.
And I've got you beat: I quit grad school in disgust with 6 credits to
go for my M.A. in English. Brown-nosing and back-stabbing aren't my
style (front-stabbing is another story), but what did it for me was
student teaching. The first time I graded papers for an English 101
class, the basic writing class that all college students take, I was
told 2 things: do NOT correct spelling, grammatical, or punctuation
mistakes, because I would hinder the students' creativity; and do NOT
give any grade lower than a B because I would hurt the students'
self-esteem. My mentor teacher then told her students that I was an
"intellectual snob" because I did my undergrad work at an Ivy League
college (actually 2nd tier; the only Ivy I applied to was Penn, I was
accepted but the financial aid package was not enough). So if you
wonder why Johnny with the college degree can't read, you know why.
And congratulations on being the first person I've ever heard use the
word "heuristic" outside of the classroom.
<<and a grumpy old fart's voice much of the time>>
Jon Winokur call this type of person a "curmudgeon" and means it quite
complimentarily. Mencken and Bierce were curmudgeons.
And I promise not to do anything you wouldn't do! ;-D

who will only admit to being over 21, so is probably one of the older
