The part in Clarkes 2001 A Space Oddysey, at the beginning,
where the apes are....changed....by the extraterrestrial
artifact, is fanciful, but not very likely. I tell you the
thing that lives here through us, or, more correctly, We
live here through It, and are but a Small Part it...that
thing is serious and it LEARNS and it BUILDS. Energy
transforms matter constantly, aeonically, and compared to
the ages and the emptiness we are a form of fire. It is slow
enough now, and enough of the initial transforming energys
have been sloughed off, so for a short time we are the fire
that burns here, as one form of the fire of the Burning
Universe. I infer from activitys gleaned from acute
observation that there are electronics at work today that
are truly an alien life form. We don't need UFO's folks,
leaking technology, or human food-soul channeling from the
All. Its quite possible this is here right now, and used
to control. The Non-von Neumann coupled with super
surveillance technology based on Recognition , Ultra
Inference and Worldwide Communications Networks. The code in
the dirt here which is a form of firelife burns the dirt and
we are part of its fire, and we have been given a piece of
the All, and contribute ignorantly self destructive, and
magnificently bold, to the identity. The subversion of this
type of technology for control purposes is paramount to
anti-survival behaviour, and isn't that funny, just as we
invent the next form of Life?

AI and The National Defense
"As was pointed out earlier , we have never felt comfortable
as a nation undertaking a large project merely for the
common good of the people. We have managed, however, to
spend a lot of money on useful (And not so useful) things,
as long as we could persuade ourselves it was in the
national defense.
Artificial Intelligence is among these. When no corporation
or foundation chose to take AI seriously, or could afford
to, The Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the
Department of Defense supported it through two decades of
absolutely vital but highly risky research. Since The
pentagon is often perceived as the national villian,
especially by intellectuals, its a pleasure to report that
in one enlightened corner of it, human beings were betting
taxpayers money on projects that would have major benefits
for the whole human race.
In the late 1970's, as some parts of the technology were
ready to move beyond research, and into developement,
venture capitalists and industrialists flocked to AI
technical meetings, and either adapted the technology to
their own needs or set up firms especially to do AI. But the
early cultivation had been supported by ARPA, which deserves
credit for its enlightened scientific leadership.
Artificial Intelligence has gone out into the world, for
better or for worse, for commerce or defense. The Japanese
plan to rear this infant to full commercial adulthood. WE
BELIEVE THAT AMERICANS SHOULD MOUNT A LARGE SCALE
CONCENTRATED PROJECT OF OUR OWN; THAT NOT ONLY IS IT IN THE
NATIONAL INTEREST TO DO SO, BUT IT IS ESSENTIAL TO THE
NATIONAL DEFENSE.
The so called smart weapons of 1982, for all their
sophisticated modern electronics, are really just extremely
complex wind-up toys compared to the weapons systems that
will be possible in a decade if Intelligent Information
Processing Systems are applied to the defense problems of
the 1990s.
In the summer of 1982, Feigenbaum was asked to give
scientific testimony on the current state of research and
developement in AI and expert systems to a panel of the
Defense Science Board, the highest level scientific group
that advises the U.S. Department of Defense. The panels
charter was to assess the possible impact of a large number
of current technologies (it is rumored they examined 70 to
80) on the Defense of The United States. In The report of
the panel, AI ranked seventh using an
opportunity-versus-risk measure, and second using an
opportunity measure."
