-Caveat Lector-

MSNBC reports this evening that the US Coast Guard has changed the mission
to "search and recovery," indicating that JFK II & Co. are now presumed
dead. Based on that, in light of this tragic accident, regardless of whether
it could have been avoided or not, what about reckless behavior?

JFK II was a multimillionare who bought a _used_ single-engine plane and
piloted the plane with so few hours in the air, at night, maybe even knowing
of the haze that many other pilots knew of. Talk about reckless behavior....

According to reports, his sister-in-law was late arriving at the New Jersey
airport, and they ended up flying at night. What about waiting till morning?
What about a commercial flight? Instead, he elected to fly that fateful
night. I write "he" b/c he was the pilot, and naturally made the final
decision. [Remember, reports indicate that JFK II claims only 300 hours of
cockpit pilot experience.] Talk about reckless behavior....

In addition, according to reports, JFK Jr. may have been wearing a cast. If
so, what business did he have flying the plane with a cast? [On a personal
note, I wore a cast for nearly 12 weeks on my left foot and recall how
limited I was in all my activities. I would not have even dared to fly a
plane. Let alone, with any passengers.] Talk about reckless behavior....

Also, witnesses at the Jersey airport report that JFK II did _not_ observe
the proper safety precautions prior to lifting off. Rather than running the
plane up and down the strip, he used the parking area, witnesses say. The
witnesses add that there may have been indications at that time that there
was something wrong with the single-engine plane. Talk about reckless
behavior....

Multimillionare buys used single-engine plane. Flying at night, without,
quite possibly, taking into consideration hazardous weather. Too few hours
of piloting for those conditions. Possibly wearing a cast while trying to
operate a plane with two other lives on board, in addition to his own. Still
in question whether precautionary measures were taken prior to lift-off. All
examples of reckless behavior by someone who either had a death wish or used
very poor & foolish/cocky judgement.

Lastly, if anyone has made this into a bigger-than-life story, it's the
media who salivates over these kinds of tragedies. When the media keeps
referring to the "American public sitting and waiting" they exagerrate the
obvious. Folks have there own lives to worry about and have accepted that
the rich take more risks on a daily basis simply because they can afford to.
Many in the media are rich themselves, and socialize with the Kennedys of
this world. If anyone is sitting by the tube and sobbing more than anyone
else, it's the media.
