Subject: NYT: Unique Headline? "Jurors" in Maryland Indict Lina Tripp

Having read multiple newspapers each day for more than 40
years, I believe I have never before read a headline such as the
one that greeted me on the bottom of page one of today's New York
Times:

"Jurors in Maryland Indict Linda Trip In Lewinsky Tapes"
I know I have read "So and So Indicted for Such and Such In [Name
of Jurisdiction]". Or Grand Jury Brings Two Count Indictment
Against..." "Maryland Prosecutors Obtain Indictment Against..."
Even "Starr Indicts [Name]."

But I do not recall, ever, such a homey, jes' folks sort of
indictment as this headline subtlly hints at. Nobody here but us
ordinary fellow citizens who happened to get called to jury duty
recently. So its not Linda Tripp, individual citizen against
State Prosecutor Stephen Montanarelli with large
taxpaper-financed budget. Just Linda Tripp vs. some randomly
selected, regular old Maryland residents.

MORE ABOUT THE HEADLINE: Notice that there is no use of the
Prosecutor's name. Perhaps the headline writer didn't have enough
space to fit in a long word like Montanarelli. (MAYBE THAT'S WHY
STARR TOOK ALL THOSE HITS FROM THE PRESS--THE POOR SOUL HAD A
SHORT NAME!)

OK, but guess how many paragraphs you need to read in this
front page story to reach the name Montanarelli? You won't find
it in the first three paragraphs, which is all you will read
unless you turn to page A9. But a referene to "Kenneth W. Starr,
The Whitewater independent counsel" shows up in Paragraph 3 on
the front page--NICE TOUCH NEW YORK TIMES!

Sorry to keep you waiting--you must wade through to Paragraph
16 to find "Today, Stephen Montanarelli, the state prosecutor who
conducted the investigation...." And just to round out a good day
of objective reporting, Paragraph 13 is the first place where any
Maryland prosecutor is referenced by name: "The county's top
prosecutor, Marna McLendon, a Republican...." But if you hang in
there until Paragraph 18 you learn the Ms. McLendon has turned
the case entirely over to Mr. Stephen ("Too Long to Print")
Montanarelli. Oh, and there seemd no need to use the word
"Democrat" in referring to State Prosecutor Montanarelli,
although it was necessary to use the term "Republican" in
connection with County Prosecutor Marna ("I'm Off the Case But I
Love to Hold Press Conferences") McLendon. TO BE FAIR TO THE NEW
YORKS TIMES; This newspaper's motto does make a cute play on the
concept of space limits in printing ("All the News That's Fit to
Print'), and, after all there are only 8 characters in the word
"Democrat." Perhaps "Republican" (weighing in at 10 characters)
was a wee bit too long.

                                        Stephen MacDonald
