Clari News: Study links abortion, low crime rate

The Chicago Tribune (8/8/99) has reported on an unpublished 45
page report that claims that for every 10% increase in the abortion
rate, there is a drop in the crime rate of 1%. Written by University
of Chicago economist Steve Levitt and Stanford University law
professor John Donohue III. The people who normally abort their
children are unwed mothers, poor and the uneducated, whose children
are normally faced with very tough lives that lead to crime. And get
this: "They're the ones who are most likely to have been unloved by
their mothers, ...'' I did not know that only white, educated and
married women could love their children. Are danger bells going off in
your head?

There is a very good reason why Levitt and Donohue's article
should remain unpublished. It is a racist work aimed at the weakest
members of society that blames them for all the problems of crime in
American society. Hence if we abort their children enough, crime will
disappear!

Now can you spot the errors in the article's argument?

The two facts, increase abortion and drop in the crime rate
are not connected. (The article holds that they are!) Blue collar
crime is mostly done by youth. Any factor that reduces the numbers of
youth, will reduce the crime rate. It has no necessary connection to
abortion. They make their claim: "independent of other factors". As
such the only factor for consideration is to abort those minority
babies to reduce crime. In fact, better education, jobs and stable
homes environments will reduce the level of teenage pregnancies and
that can be shown to reduce crime directly. Give someone a job and
they have no need to steal. Teach them about birth control and they
will not get pregnant. Allow them to have self respect and there will
be no broken homes. Crime, in America is seen as totally a black and
minority problem, as they make up a larger percentage of the prison
population then their numbers in the general population would
indicate. You can see where this is going? The article is a back door
attempt to blame blue collar crime on minorities, and thus the
elimination of said minority will make America White and crime free!

Secondly; is it not nice of them to have a simple straw man of
the poor, un wed and un educated for crime. Read Black and minorities!
They do all the crime might as well be the claim here. They are the
ones in jail. And even better, they do not have the means, or
education to defend themselves from such academic racism. Which allows
people to forget that typically Blacks and other minority groups are
forced by economic circumstances to live in the poorest areas of town
where there are no jobs, no transportation and no ability to better
themselves. With no police, these areas become crime infested. Which
does nothing and does not seek to explain why there are white youth
who also commit crimes when they come from homes that not broken, with
married parents who are not poor. By establishing that those who come
from broken homes, un wed, un educated and poor as the source of
crime, it allows us to draw the conclusion that crime is a minority
problem and with a reduction of that minority, we have a safer
society. (Read a safer White society.)

"The paper has been circulated among academics and
law-enforcement officials. Most have been cautiously positive,
pointing out that the authors are respected scholars. " (Hopefully
that title of respected scholars will be diminished with this report.)
Yet this is another fallacy. Their claim is one of false authority.
What authority do these two scholar have in this field? Just because
they have written scholarly works before does not make this one a
scholarly work either That rest upon the evidence they present and not
their racist assumptions. They present evidence that some survey's of
European countries have found similar results. Yet there is a glaring
demographic error in that European Countries are more homogeneous than
the multicultural USA. Thus the findings are not congruent to each
other. Poor white European's are not socially stigmatized into poverty
stricken areas in the same manner American minorities are. Nor do they
face the same hurdles to pass up the economic ladder as minority
American do. Yet the article refutes itself with this claim: "They say
women who are under age 25, separated, never married, poor or members
of a minority group are roughly twice as likely to have an abortion as
other women of childbearing age. " Essentially allowing that
minorities are similar to their European experience of homogeneous
female members of the majority group. Even with their reaching, they
still do not have a positive association of abortion to crime. Even
using European studies that do not reflect the American multicultural
experience, they still can not prove their main claim of higher
abortion rate will equal a lower crime rate "independent of other
factors."

Finally, we have this comment:``No one will like it,'' said
Levitt, but he added, ``I don't think it's our job as economists or
scientists to withhold truth because some people are not going to like
it." Note the use of the word truth. No scientist uses that word with
their findings. They refer to evidence, facts, or data. They need not
and cannot make such a broad claim and still claim to represent
anything scientific. If what they were presenting is the "truth" then
it fail's Popper's falsifiability theory of science. (Such that any
claim of science must be able to be disproven.) The use of the word
truth is an indication of a religious belief often intoned for the
speaking of divine revelations and not scientific studies. When
someone is claiming to be a scientist, or scientific, they need not
refer to such outlandish wording but to the facts of the matter. When
the facts are biased or racism in disguise, they need to shelter
themselves under such a mantle. It makes it easier to spread their
lies and hatred if they cloak themselves under the shelter of such a
word. For who would doubt the truth. In this case we should also add
the follow when we intone their divine revelations as the Truth (tm).

Essentially this argument is that as abortion removes the
number of Blacks and other minorities, in the US, who make up the
larger percentage of the un wed, un educated and poor people in the
US, the crime rate will drop. (Though both authors deny that this is
their intention.) Hence we eliminate minorities and crime rate drops.
Yet not one mention of this necessary conclusion is presented. We have
only dubious references to European studies, claims of their speaking
the truth. Yet no mention of this conclusion, remove minorities and
the crime rate will drop. Why? Racism must not be seen as racism,
else, people would naturally oppose it for a sickness. So they try to
hide it behind code words such as an urban problem, or in this case,
the problem is the poor, the un wed and the un educated. They call it
the "truth". When the real problem is that some people cannot see
someone from a minority and not think they are all criminal. Well do
not fall for this academic trash science. The study has not been
published and should not be.

Just Thought I Should Mention It
