There is considerable debate among theologians whether the crime referred to
in Genesis 19 was anal intercourse--or inhospitality. The prohibition on anal
intercourse occurs in the context of prohibited *religious* acts; because it
was practiced by the so-called "dog priests," who had consecrated themselves
to the goddess Anath or Asherah by castrating themselves, and who engaged in
ritual intercourse with worshippers, taking the female role, the priests who
wrote the "Mosaic" code forbade the act--again, NOT because it was evil in and
of itself, BUT because it was associated with a religion they rejected.
What happened at Sodom was something quite different. Nowhere in Scripture
does it say that "Bring them out so that we may know them" meant "Bring them
out so that we may RAPE them." What is implied here is a violation of
hospitality. The angels (that is, the messengers or delegates of God) were
*guests* of Lot, and as such were properly to be considered sacrosanct, as in
Bedouin culture today. But not only did the Sodomites seek to drag them out of
Lot's house, they tried to attack him as a "stranger" or alien...an even
greater violation of custom, if possible.
Now, whatever sexual impropriety Bill Clinton may be guilty of, it couldn't be
"sodomy" if all you're talking about is oral sex. "Sodomy" historically has
meant ANAL intercourse, as well as "Greek-style" interfemoral intercourse
("pederasty"). When our tight-assed Puritan ancestors (OK, *my* tight-assed
Puritan ancestors!) put their particular sexual biases into law, they extended
sodomy to include oral intercourse, which previously wasn't even considered
except as a form of "Onanism." THAT is, biblically speaking, "coitus
interruptus" or "coitus reservatus", in which the man does not ejaculate into
the woman's vagina; however, it came to mean the same thing as masturbation,
which the Bible doesn't deal with at all, as far as I know! In fact, if you're
accusing Clinton of sodomy, he is clearly innocent, because he was VERY
welcoming to Monica and treated her as if she was a member of the harem, er,
family... But that's another story.
