I've suspected as much. Certainly, in my former state of California, the
mortuary-cemetery biz (scam) has become a fine art. My stepmother once
worked for Rose Hills...She would listen to the salesmen discuss their
trade in private. She described it as a cynical racket...equivalent to a
shakedown or mugging. They hit on family members when they were at their
most vulnerable.. Who doesn't want their loved one to have the very best
in terms of funeral arrangements?
The opportunities for padding out the bill are infinite.
And you mentioned the ghoulish issue of mortuary workers abusing the
bodies of the dead. Positively sickening...but I've read that it's
happened.
And what about the possibility of the sale of body parts? ...shades of
Robert Louis Stevenson's "The Body Snatchers."
When I die, I want my loved ones to just plant me in the backyard
under the rose bushes.... no fuss, no muss.
