-Caveat Lector- From: ScienceWeek BULLETIN August 25, 1999 INCREASING CRITICISM OF FIRING OF TWO MEDICAL JOURNAL EDITORS Two of the world's leading medical journals have both recently experienced upheaval: in January, the American Medical Association dismissed the top editor of the Journal of the AMA, George D. Lundberg, and last month the Massachusetts Medical Society dismissed the top editor of the New England Journal of Medicine, Jerome P. Kassirer. Although statements by the journals (both of which are at present without chief editors) dwell on the differences between the two cases, the media has in general focused on the fact that both cases involved the parent societies overriding the views of the editors for apparent political or profit motives, and both medical societies have been criticized. The events are now discussed in a major article in the New York Times, with L.K. Altman writing as follows: "The journals have increasingly become cash cows for the medical societies and companies that own them, with annual profits in the tens of millions of dollars, largely from drug company advertisements. And the imperative to sustain and build those profits is changing how the journals do business -- and how the public learns about medicine -- in ways their founders could scarcely have envisioned."
