Proof of Conspiracy to profit from the War on Drugs has been
rife in Fort Lauderdale ever since Nick Navarro's time, when
the BSO turned part of the Sheriffs Department into a crack
lab in which to manufacture that drug from seized
white....the purpose? To Flood the Streets with crack
cocaine thereby facilitating sting busts upwards of 3500
people per weekend. Most served mandatory mins and were
victims of property seizures if they had any. Here is the
latest depredation of the BSO:
Breakfast at Wackenhut
Broward County Sheriff over easy, with egg on his
face as well as on the face of the judge who signed a
warrant authorizing BSO to search Wackenhut Work
Release Center, all of the residents and all of the
resident
advisors (staff). Now, I realize that as mere citizens,
we are not
privy to a lot of what goes on behind the scenes, so we
must rely on the media for enlightenment and information.
And, based on what we've been led to believe, most
citizens would have justified signing that search warrant.
Although this facility has repeatedly invited the
sheriff to come and check it out at his convenience, the
Sheriff of Broward County has chosen instead to slap the
administrator's outstretched hand with a search warrant
instead of a handshake and his employees with pat downs
instead of the pat on the back that they deserve.
I, personally, was fortunate enough to have missed their
fishing expedition, but my fellow residents, in all stages
of their day, had to suffer this degradation.
Those coming in from work had their personal items
taken from them and searched - one gentleman just coming
back from commissary had his sealed box of Sugar Twin torn
open and searched. (duh!!) along with his other purchases.
The women were literally herded together, taken down to the
yard, ordered to form 3 lines, given numbers (i.e. you're
#1, you're #2, etc.) warned that they had better remember
their numbers, ordered to face the wall and patted down.
What, no firing squad?
The women were chosen at random to take breathalyzer tests.
The male residents, who were herded none too gently to the
other side of the yard, were all given breathalyzer tests.
And the Wackenhut staff, also having been herded together
into the kitchen, were not only patted down, but
the manner in which they were treated made them feel as if
they were inmates and all of them were subjected to urine
drug tests. Kid of reminds you of the jealous vigilance and
suspicion with which
the Gestapo, S.S. and Nazi authorities questioned and viewed
each other?
Oh yeah, and the only time the drug dogs actually became
excited (causing the Raiders (BSO's elite drug task force)
to drool in anticipation of a drug bust) was when they
located a stash of chicken wings (Duh again!!, Someone's
dinner).
As deplorable, unethical and improper as this may sound, I,
being an optimist, could still consider this disgusting
example of abuse of power by The sheriff and his BSO Gestapo
squad as a blessing in disguise. How? Well now that the
residents of Wackenhut have been exonerated (all tested
negative) and the facility itself, after being searched,
proved that no one was bringing in or
stashing drugs, a true sense of pride and accomplishment
resulted in exuberant cheering and applause for a job well
done; ours.
This, to me and quite a few others who have eyes
to see, shows me that this facility, the experiment it
represents, is actually working far better than anything
BSO has done. It is obvious that the residents here have
too much respect for the people who are helping us piece
our lives back together to risk losing this opportunity at
regaining our dignity by doing anything as stupid as drugs
and/or alcohol.
But what I'd like to know and you, as tax payers,
have a right to know, is on what grounds did the judge, the
sheriff, the 40 odd raiders, 30 odd BSO officers, 3 dog
teams and photographer justify invading this facility. Also,
I'm sure you're all curious to know how much this invasion
cost us...so am I 117 walk-away escapes from this facility
in x years of operation. How Shocking? No, really, that's
not a rhetorical question. Compared these numbers to the
rate of walk away escapes from the BSO run facility and
you'll find that the difference is statistically
insignificant. (in other words, the difference is equal to
or less than the margin of error in calculating the
numbers) Wackenhut, according to the papers, is staffed,
not by professional corrections officers,
but by mere civilians with little or no experience in
corrections. Broward County Sheriff never donned a badge in
his life before he took office in the last general election
and has yet to ever walk a beat or earn an honest day's pay
as a corrections officer. In fact, he is a career politician
without a shred of law enforcement experience. The sherrif
does not work for you, ladies and gentlemen, he works for
the Law Enforcement Union, who just happens to be the
highest bidder this season. Yes, but what about that inmate
found with a sock full of crack upon his return to the BSO
facility from the Wackenhut facility. First, now this seems
pretty obvious to me, but seems to have been entirely lost
on the media as well as the sherrif, that man failed to meet
his obligation and the standards of behavior set by
Wackenhut; that's why he was sent back to jail!
Second, do you think that a similar raid on the BSO run work
release program just down the road in Ft. Lauderdale,
including frisking and urine testing all of the BSO officers
would similarly vindicate that operation? Would be
interesting to find out, huh?
Well, all that sure sounds reasonable, but you are, after
all, a convicted criminal. What's your angle? Good question
(if I do say so) what could I, as an inmate of this
facility, possibly stand to gain by rocking the boat in
defense of the facility in which I'm a non-voluntary
resident? Nothing! It was my idea to write these letters, I
have neither asked for nor received any special treatment.
On the contrary, my room and possession have been searched
"randomly" twice in less than 10 days (since I've started
commenting and writing about the unbalanced media coverage.
Coincidence?).
There is no need; the standard policy around here is fair
and tolerable. When I leave for work in the morning, my
personal items are inventoried just like everyone else. When
I return, I am searched along with my personal items, just
like everyone else. My release date is calculated by the
same method as everyone else's. I am treated by this staff
with professionalism and all the vigilance and scrutiny due
a convicted non-violent criminal paying her debt to society.
I am grateful for this opportunity for rehabilitation free
from the sneering, threatening and degrading treatment that
I endured in BSO's charge ... just like everyone else here.]
According to one BSO officer addressing one of the female
inmates during the search "We're doing this to show you
just who the F*** is in charge around here!". Several BSO
officers standing nearby concurred.
I hope this costly lesson to the taxpayer will at least put
your minds at ease that we the People are truly and
successfully trying to make our amends and to make this
world a better place for us all.
As for BSO, someone has to put a check on their voracious,
vicious lust for power before we have an Auschwitz of our
own. Oh yeah, and I hope you've ordered double prints of
those photos, guys, cause, considering what we just spent on
this fishing expedition, we, the People ought to at least
have a memento to remember it by.
