-Caveat Lector-

East Timor's conflict is on one side Catholic and on the other side
Indonesian, presumably Moslem. East Timor was run by Portugal until
Indoniesians claimed it about twenty years ago. I don't know where the
"informal suggestion from New Zealand" that non-UN forces should intervene
in East Timor described below originated, but I find it appalling.

New Zealand foreign policy is very easily swayed by its media, which have
pro-Catholic reporters covering this whole crisis. (As they tended to do
also in Croatia, Bougainville and Kosovo; both religious wars, it seemed.)
The NZ population has therefore been told that all the violence in East
Timor is coming from what is being described as the pro-Indonesian militia,
not their Catholic opponents. I find this difficult to believe from the
news footage available, and note that any commentators suggesting that the
Catholic side is initiating violence are cut short abruptly or omitted.

I also note in this regard that Don McKinnon, Foreign Minister, has made a
recent second marriage to a Catholic.

Roman Catholics are 14% of the NZ population but have gained a lot of power
here over the last twenty years. It is now extremely difficult to put
forward a non-Catholic viewpoint forward on East Timor or anything else and
get it covered by the media.
