-Caveat Lector-

I'm amazed that no one commented on Lars-Erik Nelson's column in th 26 August
New York Daily News. I found it very interesting. In part it reads as
follows:

In the end, Notra Trulock's suspicions grew so vast that everyone was part of
the problem: China, the White House, CIA, Department of Energy, National
Security Council, our nuclear laboratories and even former Republican Senator
Warren Rudman of New Hampshire. Trulock is the Energy Department counterspy
who fingered scientist Wen Ho Lee on the basis of virtually no evidence--as a
suspected spy for China. He couldn't prove his charges, so he leaked his
suspicions to the New York Times, which did a pretty good job of convicting
Lee in print.

Now the case is goingup in smoke, and so is Trulock. But with the help of
the Nw York TImes and some conservative Republicans, he had a pretty good run
at making life miserable for a lot of innocent people.

-------

On the basis of Trulock's charges and the Times' stories, Republicans
demanded the resignation of national security adviser Sandy Berger, the head
of Attorney General Janet Reno and the execution of Wen Ho Lee.

---------------

None of this tale is true. A senior counterintelligence officer at Los
Alamos, Robert Vrooman, says Lee was targeted mostly because of his Chinese
ancestry, and the case against him was manufactured out of thin air. .

"Investigative journalism has done good work," says a U>S> official who
watched as Trulock's accusations smeared innocent people, "But you guys have
to learn that not every whistle-blower that talks to you in a garage is a
keeper of the truth."
