-Caveat Lector- ISSUE 1566 Wednesday 8 September 1999 Beating killed my baby, says Liz Taylor By Philip Delves Broughton in New York THE first husband of actress Elizabeth Taylor kicked her in the stomach when he was drunk and caused her to lose their child, she has revealed. Talking about the incident for the first time, she accuses Nicky Hilton, heir to the Hilton hotel chain, of beating her up regularly during their nine-month marriage. She said: "I had terrible pains. I saw the baby. I didn't know I was pregnant, so it wasn't a malicious or on-purpose kind of act. It just happened." Miss Taylor gave an interview to Talk magazine and discusses her eight marriages, saying her time with Hilton, a spoiled handsome waster, was the worst. She said: "I was a virgin - I was half-hearted. He started drinking two weeks after we got married. I thought he was a nice, pure, all-American boy. Two weeks later, Wham! Bam! All the physical abuse started." Of her other husbands, Miss Taylor, who had eventually had four children, is particularly contemptuous of Eddie Fisher, a fellow actor and singer, and Senator John Warner of Virginia. She said that her marriage to Warner, now the chairman of the Senate armed services committee, crumbled because of his obsession with his career while she struggled with her increasing depression in Washington. Miss Taylor said she sold a 69-carat diamond and her purple Rolls-Royce to get him elected. Once she moved to Washington, she said that Warner, who called her Pooters, used to come home exhausted. She told the magazine: "Then he would say, 'Why don't you pour yourself a Jack Daniels, Pooters, and go on upstairs and watch TV'." Miss Taylor said: "I thought, 'My Jack Daniels are getting larger and larger, and if I don't get my finger out, I'm going to drink myself either to death or into such a stupor that there is going to be no life for me'." Her most passionate relationship was with Richard Burton, whom she married twice, and she still keeps a painting in her home of the Swiss castle near where she secretly met him after the filming of Cleopatra. Now recovering at home from her 18th fall, Miss Taylor lives a secluded Hollywood life, surrounded by her art collection and goes out on "dates" with a small retinue of men. They include the actor Rod Steiger, a Beverly Hills dentist, her hairdresser, Michael Jackson and Jackson's dermatologist. She usually rises in the mid-afternoon, and Steiger often appears later in an old Honda to take her out for burgers and fried chicken. Her friendship with Jackson began more than 15 years ago and has lasted longer than any of her marriages. The pop singer offered her tickets to see him in Los Angeles. The seats he gave her, however, were at the back of the stadium and she and her family left early. Jackson telephoned in tears the next day to apologise. Now they have what Paul Theroux, who interviewed Taylor for Talk, calls a "Wendy and Peter" relationship. They often go to the cinema together in disguise and hold hands in the back row. She says: "Everything about Michael is truthful. And there is something in him that is so dear and childlike - not childish, but childlike - that we both have and identify with. We have such fun together, just playing." Jackson returns the compliments, calling Miss Taylor his greatest confidante. He said: "Elizabeth is someone who loves me - really loves me." He even compares her to a mother, "and more than that. She's a friend. She's a Mother Teresa, Princess Diana, the Queen, and Wendy". Miss Taylor says she would never consider writing an autobiography, "because some of it has been so painful, I couldn't relive it. Which is one of the reasons I've avoided psychiatry". She says: "I couldn't go back to some of those places and totally relive them. I think I'd go out of my mind." The only time she visited a marriage counsellor was at the request of her last husband, Larry Fortensky, a construction worker. "Got into the car," she says, "did it. Then we wouldn't speak until the next appointment." Her marriage to Fortensky, she says, began falling apart when he gave up work and stayed at home drinking. Before that, it was romantic. "I used to get up at four in the morning and have breakfast with him," says Miss Taylor. "Then he would come home and it was wonderful - he was sweaty, he had dirty hands, he was beautiful and he played with his pigeons. I was so proud of him for working. I was kind of hurt when he stopped."
