A U.S. Army Ranger from Fort Benning
died after being shot in the chest during
             a marksmanship training exercise
             Thursday in Bamberg, Germany, a
             preliminary investigation shows.

             Sgt. Jamey J. Dimase, a 26-year-old
soldier with 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger
Regiment, was killed as a result of an
             11:30 a.m. accident, a news release from
             Fort Benning stated. Medical personnel
on the scene responded, but were
             unable to resuscitate him.

Details of events leading up to the
death were not released Friday. The
             fatality remains under investigation by
             the U.S. Army Special Operations
             Command.

             "They train realistically and it's
             dangerous," post spokeswoman
             Monica Manganaro said.

Dimase was a team leader from
             Cincinnati, where his mother resides.
His father is from Miami. Their names
             were not released.

He entered the Army seven years ago
this month and joined the Rangers in
June 1998. His elite unit that planned
             and conducted special military
missions had been on a routine training
mission in Europe for about a month.

             Training accidents have claimed the
lives of about three dozen Rangers in
the last two decades. Dimase is
believed to be the first Ranger killed on
duty since 1995, the year four Rangers
died in a swampy area at Eglin Air
             Force Base in Florida.
