Subject: Re: US anti-missile system hits target in first test

In a related move, the Navy recently took delivery of the first
SM-3 (third main model of the Navy's "Standard Missile" though
there are many sub-models -- SM-2MR, SM-2ER, etc.). The Standard
is the "heavy" SAM used by Navy surface warships such as the
Aegis Class Cruisers, the Burke Class Destroyers, etc.

The SM-3 is the first version of the Standard with a "desgined
in" anti-missile capability, though (as I understand it) that
capability is currently limited to the interception (if all goes
well) of ballistic missiles with a relatively short range (under
a couple of thousand miles) -- and hence a lower velocity.

The size of the "engagement envelope" for the SM-3, even against
what used to be termed IRBMs, is significantly more limited than
the planned engagement envelope for the anti-missile system
referred to in the subject line (and will remain so). The idea
is that several SM-3 warships in Japanese or ROC of ROK waters
chould protect the country in question from incoming relatively
short range ballistic missiles launched by, say, the PRC or the
PRK.

The SM-3 is also desgined to be operated with a "Cooperative
Engagement Capability" ("CEC" -- the same term we've heard used
in connection with the TWA800 crash).

Warm regards, Hugh S.
