Trooper Saw Battered Woman at the Governor's Mansion
"I saw her at the Governor's mansion; she was in the presence of
Roger Clinton and she either had been a victim of real serious
assault or she had been in a real bad car accident or she had run
into a door a number of times because she had big black eyes,
bruises, [and] knots on her head."
That was how Clinton bodyguard Larry Patterson described a
bizarre encounter with a woman named Denise Reeder in an
exclusive interview with NewsMax.com's Christopher Ruddy last
month. Patterson said Reeder was in Roger Clinton's car, which
had been driven to the back gate of the governor's mansion.
This was the brief conversation that ensued, as Patterson
recalls it now:
PATTERSON: Hello, Rog. How are you?
CLINTON: Fine
PATTERSON: (Noticing Clinton's female passenger) Ooh, are you
alright, ma'am?
WOMAN: Yeah
PATTERSON: Have you been in an accident?
CLINTON: This is a friend of mine. Her name is Denise Reeder
and, yeah, she's been in an accident.
The story has swirled around the Arkansas rumor mill for years,
much like the one Juanita Broaddrick confirmed last February to
the Wall Street Journal's Dorothy Rabinowitz.
Broaddrick had told friends about an ugly incident with a
then-young Arkansas attorney general named Bill Clinton; how he
cornered her in her hotel room and brutally raped her. But until
seven months ago, Broaddrick would not confirm the story on the
record.
Until the alleged Clinton rape victim herself went public, her
story was dismissed as the wild-eyed smear-mongering of a band of
dedicated Clinton-haters, a complete fabrication.
Is Denise Reeder another Juanita Broaddrick?
Rick and Beverly Lambert, the husband and wife team of crack
private investigators retained by Paula Jones to unearth a string
of Jane Does linked to Bill Clinton, tried to track Reeder down.
In March, Mrs. Lambert told NewsMax.com that Reeder had remarried
and left Arkansas, taking a new last name so common it made her
all but impossible to trace.
A formal request for an investigation was filed with the Pulaski
County District Attorney's office in March 1992, naming Reeder as
a possible assault victim.
The request for investigation is long on inference, short on
evidence - and it's hard to take seriously. But the citation of
Clinton bodyguard Larry Patterson does raise more questions.
"After I had the conversation with [State Police Director, Col.
Tommy] Goodwin and I asked some questions at the time and he said
the allegation had been made that either Carl Kirkland or myself
had either picked this lady up at the governor's mansion and
driven her back to the Capitol Hotel or picked her up at the
Capitol Hotel and driven her to the governor's mansion. I did
neither one of those."
However, Patterson added:
"I saw her at the governor's mansion with Roger Clinton...she
had big black eyes, bruises [and] knots on her head."
What really happened to Denise Reeder? Was her battered
condition the result of some unfortunate accident, as Roger
Clinton claimed? If so, why, then, wasn't she on her way to a
hospital, instead of driving with the Governor's brother into the
Governor's mansion through the Governor's back gate?
Like Juanita Broaddrick's story, until the elusive Ms. Reeder
decides to clarify the situation herself, her case remains a
tantalizing mystery.
