<< "It's immoral to make the claims process more difficult," American Legion
National Commander Al Lance, attorney general of Idaho said. "It is
unconscionable to do it by deceitfully eviscerating existing law. This
directive puts the entire financial and procedural burden on the veteran,
increasing the probability that solid claims will be rejected on a
technicality. That is a disgraceful way to treat the defenders of freedom,
many of whom come to the VA wearing the irrevocable wounds of battle."
Chartered by Congress on Sept. 19, 1919, The American Legion's 17,500 service
officers represent tens of thousands of claimants a year before the VA. >>
I know being exposed to bad poetry is pretty awful, but after a trip to
Turkey I wrote the following, which pretty much tells how an American expects
veterans to be treated.
At Izmir Station
They led me to a glass cage
where a lioness with red-gold hair
settled me with tea,
dialed phones, spoke incantations,
and got me back on track.
Then they came--poor and wrinkled--
three old men
almost comic in their scraps of uniform.
One had only the hat,
one a jacket, wounded by moth,
its two stripes hanging from broken threads.
He was the ranking man.
She dropped me in midsentence,
hurried to them, took their papers,
respectfully issued tickets.
"Who are they?" I asked when they had gone.
The lioness, haughty look back in place,
slanted her green eyes at me.
"They are our heroes," she said.
"They fought the Greeks at Corinth.
For them, everything is free."
And I, stunned to find
soldiers honored still
so long after battle,
forgot even to ask who won.
