The motivation to join The Salvation Army in peacetime is similar to the desire to become a wartime warrior-defender: saving lives for the present with future implications. In the first case it is the custom to go unarmed, but in Luke 22:36 Jesus commanded his disciples “He that hath no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one”. Many instances of chaplain assistants armed blew away attackers while defending their chaplain. On December 7, 1941 Aviation Ordnanceman 3rd class John D. Buckley, a Salvationist and member of the Future Officers‘ Fellowship was killed in action at his machine gun post, Pearl Harbor. March 1942 saw the transport of all Japanese on the West Coast including Salvation Army persons to relocation camps. Major and Mrs. Tozo Abe during their three-year internment at Heart Mountain, Wyoming continued their Salvationist officer functions in uniform. During World War II the Salvation Army operated 200 USO clubs as well as 219 emergency service centers (Red Shield clubs) which offered showers and sleeping facilities for the military. Communication with some territories has been cut off for six months or more on occasion. The Salvation Army is without guns now in Vietnam, restricted to non-evangelical duty and planning good works. In the United States today Justice Fellowship president Patrick Nolan says “The (criminal justice ) Index demonstrates that the system is failing because of our current overuse of prisons as punishment, our failure to address the needs of the victims and a total disregard for the rehabilitation of non-violent offenders who often become violent while incarcerated.” “The Salvation Army supports the concept of Restorative Justice which emphasizes the ways in which crime harms relationships in the context of community. Crime is viewed as a violation of the victim and the community, not a violation of the state. As a result, the offender becomes accountable to the victim and the community, not the state”. A thirteen point description of Restorative Justice in practice includes that : 1. “Support and assistance are provided to victims and families of victims by community volunteers, faith communities and professional agencies”; and 2. “Restitution is given priority over other financial obligations of the offender”......4. “The community provides work opportunities so offenders can pay restitution to victims”.... (WAR CRY, August 7, 1999). To summarize, the Salvation Army is a disciplined institution with a chain of command, firm rules on welfare cases, and strict financial controls with low overhead. A reluctance to kill must be overcome by our polite warrior-to-be - it is a Jewish tenet that if some one comes at you with intent to kill, you kill him first, because your body belongs to God and you must defend it. The first rule is STAY ALERT and STAY ALIVE. To prepare I remember FIX BAYONETS: The Korean veteran Captain-instructor shouted KILL! KILL! KILL! The emotional quality and excitement of his voice made our hearts pound. He roared NEVER NEVER NEVER GIVE UP! In discussion after the first session we realized that our training with other action-at-a-distance weapons was not a game but serious business. We began to sharpen our bayonets. That night we mentally rehearsed the kick and stomp of clearing flesh from the blade. We mentally rehearsed the butt stroke to the opponents chin and and bridge of the nose and tensed, flexed and relaxed our muscles. To discuss the above with a shrink-meister is to risk being labeled “Psychotic”, with subsequent denial of long-term nursing home care insurance. The warrior spirit requires paying the price of servanthood Those who face fear must have time to wind up before the action and wind down after the action. This was not seen in Vietnam. Personnel were hurried to and from by air when a cruise on a ship was needed. Time for mental rehearsal thinking of every detail in advance requires an above average ability to concentrate and survive. The warrior trains himself not to be afraid and to be cool after the first bullet misses his head. I did observe a young officer who imagined and almost fainted and almost fell out of his chair during a class on nerve gasses - STICK THE NEEDLE INTO YOUR BUTT THROUGH THE CLOTHING WITHOUT DELAY. The ideal warrior will visit the wounded in VA Hospitals and Veterans Homes, even bringing cassette music to heal emotional wounds and playing the music at the bedside. The warrior watches the backs of the men around him as part of STAY ALERT. The warrior is able to learn by doing and recapping the day’s experience. “Good judgment comes from experience and experience is gained from bad judgment”. The warrior is demanding with respect to basics, he is an enforcer. The warrior has the moral courage not to look the other way. He checks. The warrior is alert for discrepancies in detail. The warrior must be prepared to kill upon command. This presupposes trust in the chain of command. There is not much time to decide if the order was lawful or not. Consequences are especially great in the case of Navy carrier aviation and submarines. The warrior learns the fundamentals by rote. The warrior is usually thought of as a proud person, but “pride goeth before a fall.” The humility of the most humble, Moses, is needed: defined as absolute determination and tenacity, not wimpishness not arrogance. Humility will take you where you don’t want to go. The warrior will accept a supply assignment and present incontrovertible facts to an occasional paper-pusher rule-maker in Quartermaster - for starters. There are times to violate the chain of command. The warrior exudes confidence. The warrior appreciates history and checks more than one source if possible. The warrior expects more of higher ranks. The warrior treats subordinates with respect and dignity, but uses shocking expression when discipline and/or emergency produces unwarranted hesitation. In many cases the warrior wears decorations for the team, demonstrating loyalty. The camaraderie, inspiration and encouragement of others causes the warrior to remain so. Reliability is a hallmark The warrior is in love with the absolute truth. ------------------------------------------------- 2. Linder, USN (Ret) “A lost manuscript, found literally in a closet sea chest, adds the final missing puzzle to the most climactic moments of the World War II Battle of Midway.” A hidden story of Commander Stanhope C. Ring, commander of the USS Hornet (CV-8) Air Group is faithfully reproduced uncorrected unedited and explained. “None of the principal historians of the battle ever interviewed Ring..:” Justice requires the inclusion of the following “Closer to the truth may be the fact that Admiral Marc Mitscher, an icon of naval aviation and skipper of the Hornet at the time, rose consistently in support of Ring’s actions during the battle. He requested Ring specifically as his chief of staff in Patrol Wing Two following Midway and for his battle staff in the Solomons. He held Ring in such high esteem that he presented Ring his Captain’s shoulder boards when Ring was selected later for promotion. Mitscher’s closeness with Ring emphasized another facet of Ring’s personality. Mitscher’s biographer wrote that , “Mitscher disliked yes-men, shrinking violets and garrulousness. He wanted positive people on his staff, and usually eliminated officers who had to qualify their every statement. Shawstad My favorite teacher passed away April 1997. His voice I have heard more than of any other person. In WWII he served thru France and Germany interviewing POWs. He was so verbose, critical and idealistic that he was never promoted; he remained a well-read and knowledge-intensive private with an outstanding and accurate memory. He thought that compromise was necessary for promotion. He disapproved of the "terminal colonel" until he realized that the transition to flag rank had to be approved by politicians. He was a top-notch student and conversationalist, always teaching. His favorite general was the Scipio ten years younger than Hannibal. Scipio was a master of suprise who defeated Hannibal during the Punic Wars. Scipio was never defeated. Scipio entrepreneured equipment and supplies when necessary. After the battles he did not destroy the conquered. Among other heroes my teacher studied in depth were General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, General Claude J. E. Auchinleck and General George Patton. It was MacArthur and Patton whom he declared to be Junior Scipios. Because of my experience my orientation is with Patton in military tactics and discipline. I had served on loan to the remains of Patton's Third Army in Fort Benning (1951) so when I heard this assessment the conversations continued. His anecdotes were reinforced later in printed form by and about Patton. The satisfaction of work with the military camaraderie of fully competent men for the professional who does not work alone is second only to the pleasure of one's own creative work. Therefore it is probable that Patton enjoyed writing more than forging his army and conduct of the war. Order Patton's "War As I Knew It" and D'Este's book "Patton, A Genius For War." West Point historian Colonel Roger Nye said "Patton was perhaps the best prepared leader of all time, who studied from boyhood and the rest of his life, and kept meticulous records of his progress." Who was my teacher? My great and inspirational teacher became a physics and mathematics professor and innovated Volitional Science in 1961, a true science dealing with erratic beings who can make choices. His favorite people on whose shoulders he stands were scientists and innovators, rather than military. His ideas will provide a proper defense and build freedom. He did not want publicity about his ideas outside his circle of students until his large book was ready, except for non-confidential conversation and printed matter written or authorized by him. I had a rare opportunity for conversation with non-confidential sections after his educational institute lecture on a Friday from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. The non-passive and non-stop conversation continued from 3 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday. We were so busy one-on-one that Mrs. Suzanne Galambos provided our only meal for the 21 hours, a superb omelet. I last heard his voice via telephone discussing many topics on July 25, 1989 before his overwhelming illness. The first volume of his book is deliverable now, in 1999, and the title is “Sic Itur Ad Astra” (This Is The Way To The Stars). A massive outpouring of other volumes is forthcoming. Our lives have been marred by pessimism no longer warranted. It will be proven in time that Galambos has added more value to civilization than any man this century.
