The Anabaptists, represented most directly today by the Hutterite Brethren,
believe that the state is not so much evil as *irrelevant* to their lives as
Christians. If we create our own institutions, our own businesses, our own
currency, our own schools, and do a good enough job of it that other people
start using them instead of the "gummint" variety, we CAN make the state
irrelevant. Spooner and some of the other American anarchists are good on
this; see also Peter Kropotkin, *Mutual Aid*. For an example of a very
effective parallel institution, look at Mennonite Mutual Aid, which provides
everything from insurance to retirement homes for its members; it's a
"fraternal benefit society", and the IRS HATES it, because it isn't taxable!
(It's also next to impossible to set up a new fraternal benefit society
today, for obvious reasons.)
