In the same waters and from the same airport, the crashes have many similarities, yet notable differences. Eyewitness accounts, so prominent in the Flight 800 case, seem non-existent surrounding Flight 990. A simple explanation: Location and time of day. But would eyewitnesses make a difference to federal investigators in the Egypt Air case? None were considered at the only public hearing into Flight 800 in Baltimore. Their reports were banned, and live testimony not allowed by NTSB leadership. Flight 800 crashed 10 miles south of the Hamptons in Long Island just after the sun had set over the tourist filled summer rentals. After 800 went down, a nearly continuous stream of eyewitness accounts filled the newsrooms and subsequent news reports. If ever eyewitness viewing could be maximized, this was the time and place. According to the NTSB, the FBI interviewed some 458 eyewitnesses. Conversely, Flight 990 went off RADAR 60 miles off quiet Nantucket Island, well into the night of the Fall season. Most prospective Flight 990 eyewitnesses were sleeping Islanders. Early Egypt Air news reports lacked eyewitness input, and subsequent discussions were based on speculation and a few moments of RADAR coverage. Time after time, parallels to Flight 800 were forwarded. Last Sunday, Eleanor Clift (Newsweek) on PBS's The McLaughlin Group said, "we know better this time," speaking about the lesson learned with Flight 800. Large aircraft can just "fall out of the sky," she said, without high explosives. But is this really what we learned from Flight 800? A closer look at the details teaches us something completely different. Glaring anomalies, contradictory findings, and countless eyewitness statements educate us for the need of an independent agency to oversee these politicized and under-scrutinized investigations. Flight 800: Reality and Official Interpretation Immediately after TWA 800 went down, journalists interviewed dozens of eyewitnesses. A "streak of light" was reported to ascend from the ocean surface and cause the disaster. Meanwhile, FBI agents interviewed hundreds more. And nearly a year and a half after the tragedy, the CIA explained the sightings in a dramatic animation, aired during a nationally televised FBI press conference. The animation explained that the eyewitnesses did not see a separate object, but the plane itself in "various stages of crippled flight.� But the data used by the CIA was contradicted by the RADAR data, and eyewitnesses disagreed with the official interpretation of their observations. The Boeing Co. stated that they did not "fully understand the data used to create it.� The NTSB realized the flaws in CIA's data and refused to explore the exaggerated climb in their simulation exhibit. And two months after its release, the CIA admitted to Congress that it had not interviewed a single eyewitness during the production of the animation, but relied on a selected group of eyewitness�s statements from the FBI. Disregard for the RADAR data and eyewitness accounts stripped the CIA animation of its credibility within the scientific community and resulted in conflict with eyewitness testimony. Many eyewitnesses watched the animation and were bewildered. Paul Runyan witnessed the crash and the CIA animation. Responding to the CIA's assertion that he had seen the plane rising, Runyan exclaimed, "Yeah right, coming off the water�What I saw was going up from the surface�like a rising flare.� National Guard pilot Major Fred Meyers and his crew were the first on the scene during search and rescue. Witnessing the event from his Black Hawk helicopter, Meyers reacted to the animation and related FBI statements: "Well that's pure fabrication�What's going on in the FBI, I don't know." The eyewitnesses accounts are numerous and consistent. NTSB Exhibit 4A: "102 gave information about the origin of the streak. Six said the streak originated from the air, and 96 said that it originated from the surface.� But federal investigators disagree. Although the eyewitnesses and RADAR data state the contrary, the official version of the crash of Flight 800 is based on a sharp "zoom climb" (exchange of airspeed for altitude). The Boeing Company seems to take the eyewitness accounts and RADAR data more seriously. With no adequate explanation of the rising "streak of light" forthcoming from federal investigators, Boeing last week sent scientists to test for explosive residues among the Flight 800 wreckage. The NTSB halted similar tests in 1997 when nitrates were found within the center wing tank. Nitrates, possible explosives signatures, were detected by NASA scientists, contracted by the NTSB to investigate a "splatter pattern" found on a piece of the center wing tank which landed in an anomalous position of the debris field. Upon notification of the nitrate presence, NTSB Fire and Explosions Group Chairman Dr. Merrit Birky failed to order any follow-up testing of the splatter pattern at NASA, nor did the NTSB release the NASA report identifying the nitrate presence at the Baltimore hearings. A more thorough Boeing scientist may determine the source of the nitrates, and possibly the cause of the disaster. Like Boeing, dozens of independent researchers question federal investigators and place more credence on the eyewitness statements,. Names like Commander Donaldson, Ian Goddard, Tom Shoemaker, Michael Hull, Kelly O'meara and the Flight 800 Independent Researchers Organization are well known among a growing list of citizens tired of the flawed logic and contradictory scenarios emanating from federal agencies. These researchers are confident that the data will speak for itself, eroding any official conclusions they contradict. And now it appears that Congress is taking notice. During a closed-door briefing in May, independent researchers discussed with House Aviation Subcommittee Chairman John Duncan the anomalies of TWA Flight 800. Subsequent independent reports are presently under review by Chairman Duncan.
