-Caveat Lector-
A couple of points.
* Nixon's relationship with the Establishment or "Oligarchy" was always
antagonistic. As the White House tapes and various accounts of Nixon attest,
Nixon had an almost paranoid hatred of the Establishment including the press,
think-tanks, the "Wise Men", rich people in general, the CIA and of course
Rocky. On a couple of occasions he talked of breaking into the CFR offices
and giving them a going over. He also believed the Nelson had used dirty
tricks against him back in 1960 and often baited Kissinger about his
relationship with Rocky.
* I think the Rockefeller power had passed into David's hands long ago,
perhaps as soon as David entered the banking business. Nelson's aims were
always to be the top politician as opposed to David's more astute
behind-the-scenes manipulations. As Governor of NY and a perennial
presidential candidate who never got onto the ticket, Rocky was never quite
as successful in power play as David.
