-Caveat Lector-

A week or so ago I wrote regarding the fact that St Martin's Press was
amazingly cooperative regarding recalling and burning "Fortunate Son," a
biography of Gov. Goerge W. Bush written by a guy who apparently had broken
the law at some point in time. The entire media was all for it, and
apparently no one who has ever been convicted of a crime need apply to be
published.

Anyway, it appeared tht St Martin's Press is a division of Holzbrinck GmBH,
the German Publish House. I said that considering the material I've read
about the Bush family connections with Germany, Nazi and otherwise, perhaps
they lit the bonfire as a personal favor.

Going over some material from earlier this month, I discovered a piece by
Paul D. Colford, a Newsday writer. It is quite long, but the most
interesting paragraphs to me were the following:

"St. Martin's triggered an earlier controversy in l996 when Thomas Dunne
Books prepared to publish David Irving's "Goebbels: Mastermind of the Third
Reich," a revisionist bio of Adolf Hitler's propaganda minister. Irving is a
controversial historian who has argued that Hitler knew nothing about the
extermination of the Jews.

Publishers Weekly decried his Goebbels book as "repellent," and St Martin's
was besieged with criticism in the media and from its own employees. Dunne
insisted he did not know of Irving's Holocaust denial. Finally, Thomas J.
McCormack, then the CEO of St. Martin's, announced the book would not be
published after all."

The German ownership of American publishing houses may prove interesting
indeed. Prudy
