This meteor passed right over our neighborhood ( Tuscaloosa ) , and a few
minutes after it was seen, a fire in the woods was reported in Shelby County,
which is south, southwest of Birmingham. Local officials said there was no
relation between the two.
Local TV showed some video taken by a security camera at the time of the
bolide, and you could see the light brightness increase dramatically, with
the shadows of the items in the cameras field of vision moving quickly from
one side of the frame to the other. A friend of mine loading his car to take
his wife to a early takeoff at the airport saw the bolide pass overhead and
YES it was a meteor.
The sucker was so large that sonic booms were heard moments after the light
went out...this is very unusual for a meteor, but not unheard of. Remember
the daylight bolide in New Zealand earlier this year? Meteor the size of a
truck exploding in broad daylight leaving a cloud of bluish smoke lingering
for quite a while in the sky.
Alabama is not new to meteors or meteorite...there is an ancient meteor
crater in the Wetumka area that is quite large, and is fairly well know
about. It is quite worn down, but still visible if you know what you are
looking at.
