Robert you write very eloquently and your philosophical position is
sound. The only problem is that utopian societies such as you envision are
impossible within the framework of our society and, indeed, maybe impossible
with human beings as we now know them. I deplore violence, in the sense that
it is wrong to act out aggressively. I think that people need to defend
themselves more than they do, and sometimes in their defense they must be
violent. The society creates the problems, and the society has been molded
by corporations and the government, and they are the targets for much
frustration, frustration that has been building for 50 years or more.
Violence, while deplorable is inevitable and necessary at times.
Jesus himself (for those of you who are fans of Him) got angry, he
overturned the tables of the moneychangers. I like to imagine that he
bruised up a couple of them in that exchange. He said "turn the other
cheek", but as a theologist whom I admired (Walter Martin, who is no longer
amongst the living) said, "Jesus said to turn the other cheek, but if they
hit you in the other one then I think you gotta defend yourself, so look
out!" [I paraphrase]
Reality is what must be faced. We live in a world which makes violent
inevitable, and necessary. Either one is the victim of it or one is a
perpetrator (to one degree or another, even when defending oneself). I do
not want to be a victim.
