John W. Magaw Joins FEMA Team
Washington, December 9 -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
announced today that John W. Magaw will be joining the agency management
team. Magaw, who currently serves as director of the Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), will work in the FEMA Director's office where he
will plan and coordinate FEMA's domestic terrorism efforts.
"I am pleased John Magaw has agreed to join the FEMA team," said FEMA
Director James Lee Witt. "I look forward to working with him as we continue
refining our plans that deal with the consequences of any acts of domestic
terrorism in the United States."
Magaw brings to his new position over 38 years of law enforcement service
during which he distinguished himself as an innovative leader. He completed a
restructure at ATF and established a strategic plan that is used as a model
by other law enforcement-related agencies. His changes to the agency also
have resulted in the restoration of ATF's public image.
Before he was appointed ATF director, Magaw served as director of the United
States Secret Service. Among his various assignments, he was in charge of all
protective operations for the President of the United States and the First
Family. He began his career in law enforcement as a trooper with the Ohio
State Patrol.
Magaw was the recipient of the 1991 and 1999 Presidential Rank Meritorious
Award and the 1995 Presidential Rank Distinguished Award. His signature of
excellence has earned him the reputation of "senior statesman" within the law
enforcement community. He brings to FEMA his unquestionable dedication,
professionalism and expertise.
