If the original Y2K thesis was correct, i.e. that we were facing major
infrastructure failure due to Y2K issues if nothing was done, then I
expect major problems since even a casual review of so called remediation
efforts shows that the problem was too massive to be "fixed" in the short
time most entities devoted to remediation.
The distinction between "critical" and "non critical" systems
is false, the constant shortening of the goal posts by reclassifying
so called critical systems, and the basic neglect of imbedded chips
makes the current claims of successful remediation a joke.
OTOH, if the Y2K was never a real problem to begin with, then the
effectiveness of remediation is irrelevant. I am not aware of many
credible IT types who believe Y2K was never a severe problem that
required massive remediation.
If Y2K was never a real issue to begin with, then it will go down
as the biggest and most expensive hoax in history. If it is a real
problem, it won't be "fixed" and we are in for very interesting
times.
