China doubling up arms purchases from Russia:

China has entered into negotiations with Russia for the purchase of more
fighter aircraft, warships and submarines to add to its growing arsenal of
Russian arms.

Diplomatic sources in Beijing have told Jane's Defence Weekly that China is
seeking to buy a second batch of 40 Sukhoi Su-30MKK fighters to supplement
its initial order for 40 aircraft, which was finalised in August.

...These deals, if concluded, would represent a significant increase in the
PLA's air and naval capabilities. Such assets would considerably enhance
China's area denial capabilities, especially in the East China Sea where
serious tensions exist with Taiwan.

[commentary]

This is one of many recent purchases that have some people wondering what
China is up to. In the past, China has preferred building their own
technological advances into the hulk of surplus equipment, and the last few
years have seen an intensive development towards indiginous designs. This is
somewhat of a turn around. They seem to be going for a quick build now.

Although still pressing for joint development, they seem to be on a spending
spree in relation to Air Denial and SLOC equipment. The SU-30 M (M for
export
class) is considered a superb *ahem* possibly the best multi-role fighter on
the market (stomped all over us at the last Paris Air Show) and carries some
of the newest and most advanced anti-ship/air-to surface missiles in Russian
manufacture. It doubles as a good air-superiority platform, an unusual
flexible tube on the engines gives the flaps an extra 15 degree vector
thrust
making fast turns appears as if the fighter can stop and turn in midair.
Similarly, the Sovremenny Class, though older (think big thick bulkheads) is
considered a floating missile platform for short and medium range anti-ship
missiles, as well as strong anti-air capabilities.

Looks like someones getting ready for a quick sprint across some
straights...

Just a thought.
