We have contacted the headquarters of our phone service, in Wall South Dakota, inquiring as to why the service was disconnected. We were told the information could not be released. However, they did say that a Government official called them to request that the phone service be terminated and they complied. We have also been contacted by the Nebraska Public Power. (they provide the electricity to our reservation) They have been requested to cut off the electricity to those people occupying the tribal offices. We are becoming very concerned. The elders and women are asking that the children be removed from the tribal offices for safety reasons. There is a concern that a confrontation may ensue. The Federal mediator, Silkie Hanson, is on her way back to Pine Ridge Reservation because of these developments. The people will feel more secure if a federal official is present- in hopes of preventing any violence that may occur. With no telephone service our direct contact abilities are gone.
