The following is a press release from the Leonard Peltier Support
Group of Greater New England. The ongoing imprisonment of Leonard Peltier
and the eviction of Dineh (Navajo) people from their homeland in Arizona for
coal strip mining are the same evidences of human rights violations that are
related with the U.S. dishonoring treaties with other nations to develop
missile defense ("star wars") that jeopardizes the well being for all people.
It is ironic that Hillary Clinton has chosen the anniversary date of
Leonard Peltier's arrest to formally announce her candidacy for the New York
Senate race. After six years of refusing to respond to Leonard Peltier's
petition for executive clemency, the U.S. media continues to hide the fact
of actions of U.S. ethnic cleansing for greed and corruption. Please read

February 6, 2000 marks the 24th year of the imprisonment of Leonard
Peltier. Amnesty International has called for his immediate and
unconditional release. Leonard Peltier is an Anishinabe-Lakota Indian and a
leading member of the American Indian Movement (AIM), who is serving two
consecutive life sentences for "aiding and abetting" the murders of FBI
agents' Jack Coler and Ronald Williams on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation
in 1975. Considering the facts of this case, that they hold Leonard Peltier
responsible for their deaths is simply preposterous.
Ramsey Clark, former U.S. Attorney General, wrote in the forward of
Leonard
Peltier's book, Prison Writings: My Life Is My Sun Dance: "With government
complicity, a rogue paramilitary group that proudly called itself the GOONS
-- Guardian of the Oglala Nation -- were provided with weapons, training and
motivation to create a wave of violence, still remembered as "the reign of
terror," against traditional Indian people and their supporters, including
the American Indian Movement. In March of 1975 alone seven Indians were
killed, their deaths going virtually uninvestigated despite the presence of
that army of FBI agents and other federal, state, and tribal lawmen. And
that's why the traditional people, the Elders of the Lakota (Sioux) people,
asked AIM, as they had two years before at Wounded Knee, to send some people
to help protect them. And I say, thank God AIM did."
What is behind these ruthless endeavors to control the Indian population?
Could it be related to the fact that on the day of the shootout at the
Jumping Bull Ranch in 1975, 1/8 of the Pine Ridge Reservation was
transferred for U.S. uranium and gold mining interests? These events are
still happening today. By legal maneuvering the U.S. Government has given a
notice of eviction to thousands of Dineh (Navajo) people to move from their
homeland in Big Mountain, Arizona for coal strip mining by Peabody Coal
Company, a subsidiary of Lehman Brothers. The U.S. government and Senator of
Arizona, John McCain, claim that they are working according to the law of
the land. It is outrageous that sacred land is slated to be strip-mined for
coal, with its dislocated people to be sent downstream from America's worst
nuclear waste accident. The outcome, if the plan becomes reality, would be
yet more suffering, continued human rights abuses, and the consequences of
increased global warming and the raping of Mother Earth.
The world needs justice to survive the greed and control of a few. The
peoples' voice must be heard. Please join the campaign to support Leonard
Peltier's parole this March, support his petition for Presidential Executive
Clemency, call for Congressional Hearings to investigate documented FBI
abuses and help save Big Mountain. We can restore justice and honor treaties
with sovereign nations. We have a chance, if we unite and act soon, to make
a real difference for all our relations.
